Synopsis

Simon sits in for Chris and talks with legendary music producer Trevor Horn. Plus, we play his biggest hits and uncover the unusual secrets behind the humble vending machine.

COIN AND GET IT!

The days of getting cigarettes from a machine may very well be numbered and this revelation got us all nostalgic about the coin operated wonder that is the Vending Machine. When were these mechanised merchandising miracles invented and will we ever be so advanced as to solve the problem of the packet of crisps stuck in the spiral? We’re getting our monies worth with Andy Porter, Chairman of the Automatic Vending Association.

HORN OF PLENTY

Legendary music producer Trevor Horn came in to talk about his amazing 30 year career in music, from his early pop career with the New Wave pioneers The Buggles to his groundbreaking work on Frankie Goes to Hollywood's debut album to his current stint producing Robbie Williams’ new album Reality Killed the Video Star.

Tuesday 13 October - Question

My son and I often fish on an enclosed area of water. Some anglers call it a lake and others a pond, so, at what point does a pond become a lake? Geoff Pickford, Leek, Staffordshire

Tuesday 13 October - The word "pond" originally came from the word "pound", which meant a confined enclosure which was man-made. But when the word was carried abroad to places like the United States, natural pools also began to be called ponds. Because of this, there is no universally-agreed technical distinction between the two - which is why there is so much confusion.
There are some who still insist that ponds are man-made, while lakes are formed by Mother Nature. Others argue that a pond is a "body of water where light penetrates to the bottom" or one "which is shallow enough for rooted water plants to grow" or even "a body of water which lacks wave action on the shoreline". Ron in Aldridge has emailed to say that "a pond is 'still water'' whereas a lake usually has inlet and outlet stream or river. And Adam on the A14 - who is a bailiff his local fishing club - has texted to say that a pond becomes a lake when it's one acre in size. But even this is disputed. The British charity Pond Conservation, for instance, defines a pond to be a man-made body of water which is up to five acres in size, while other European biologists have set the upper limit at over twelve acres. So, because of all this, my answer is going to have to be that there IS no answer.
