FREAKY FACTS
In their first book, Freakonomics, they asked those tough questions that others - either through fear or forgetfulness - didn’t. The next instalment poses more problems and hopes to show the world
for what it really is; be that good, bad or just plain freaky. We’re talking to one half of the SuperFreakonomics sensation, Stephen J. Dubner…

FOX THE FOX
Monday 12 October - Question
My three kids drive me nuts with the numbers printed on the individual packets of Cheese Strings. Each has their own theory as to why the number is there and why the particular number that they have is more important/better/worth more than their siblings. So that peace may reign supreme in the lunch box, why do they put a number on? Jon Birks, Essex
Monday 12 October - Answer
Are you ready for this? This could be a world exclusive... I've spoken to the people at the Irish company, Kerry Foods, which makes Cheese Strings, and the answer is quite simple. It's all about quality control and traceability. You get a number between 1 and 24 on each packet, and it basically tells you which part of the production line that individual packet was made on at their factory in Charleville in County Cork. The company know that kids love to play these games so they've taken the concept and introduced a new product called Cheese string shots which has 48 numbers - so that children have even more scope to play their games.
