Synopsis

Simon sits in for Chris and is joined live in the studio by a very well travelled Charley Boorman. And we speak to Pam 'The Jam' Corbin about the sticky world of preserves.

'Pam Jam, Thankyou Ma'am'

So we’ve got ourselves into a bit of jam at Drivetime? Foxy told us she had taken to the occasional potting of preserves which got us to thinking why is potted plum, jam and is it only orange that makes it Marmalade? So we asked the wonderful Pam’ The Jam’ Corbin author of 'River Cottage Handbook - The Preserves', just what is the difference between a preserve and a conserve?

River Cottage Handbook - The Preserves.

Charley Boorman

Following on from his first series in 2008 Wicklow to Woolagong, By Any Means, Charley Boorman is back in the saddle for a brand-new adrenaline-fuelled adventure, travelling from Sydney, Australia through Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan and finishing in Tokyo, Japan...by any means! And he dropped by to tell us all about his adventures...

Wednesday 7th October - Question

Every day I drive 25 miles between Peasedown St John and Devizes. In the morning ad I drop into Welow, Sir Tel goes crackly, then I lose him for three or four minutes. In the evening the same happens to Drivetime as a travel home. However, BBC Somerset and BBC Wilts do not suffer the same phenomenon. I can listen to both on their respective frequencies over the entire journey. This happens in various cars/radios. Why is this? I would have thought that the BBC stations use the same tranmitter. Dave Stephens, Somerset

Wednesday 7 October - Answer

I've had a chat with one of the BBC's top experts on transmitters, and he says that the Radio 2 signal in Dave's area will be coming from transmitters in the South of Wales and in the Isle of Wight - so there will be a black spot on the edge of each of those transmitters where he'll lose the Radio 2 signal. BBC Somerset on the other hand, uses a different transmitter in Wells, which floods the entire area. I asked why they couldn't put more transmitters in to cover the cracks and he said because it would be hideously expensive - they'd have to install another 200 transmitters over the 220 they've already got for FM. He says as it stands around 99 per cent of the country gets proper coverage.
