Synopsis

Simon Mayo sits in the driver's seat all week and is joined tonight for a very special live session from our favourite jazz virtuoso Jamie Cullum!

The Sun Always Shines On Norway!

Norway is the best place in the world to live according to the UN’s Human Development Index and it's not the first time it's been top of the population pops, they were last year too! So we spoke to Fabian Stang Mayor of Oslo who told us why the sun always seems to shine on Norwegians?

Jamie Cullum

Our favourite jazz virtuoso Jamie Cullum swung by for a very special live session with Simon on Drivetime tonight and treated us to a super cool keyboard cut of Rhianna's 'Don't Stop the Music'. Swingin!

Tuesday 6th October - Question

When I was a lad, the font of all knowledge was to be found in the Encyclopedia Britannica. Now we have the worldwide web, how many volumes would be needed to have all this information on a shelf? Ian Wynn

Tuesday 6th October - Answer

We can roughly measure the amount of information on the internet by looking at the number of web pages. Extrapolating from the most recent data available in 2005 and 2007, I'd estimate that there are currently around 40 billion pages on the worldwide web. The average web-page contains about 1,000 words, so in total, let's say there are 40 trillion words on the internet. A complete set of the Encyclopedia Britannica - made up of 32 volumes - contains an average of 44 million words. If we divide 40 trillion by 44 million we get 909,000 SETS of the Encyclopedia Britannica, and if we divide that by two to take account of the duplication of information on the internet and then multiply by 32 to get the number of volumes - we get fourteen-and-a-half million volumes - which would take up an awful lot of shelf space. As for whether the internet can carry on growing indefinitely, all the information it holdsis held on servers, so as long as new servers continue to be built, there is no limit to how much more information it can hold.
