Synopsis
Each week Aled Jones plays tracks from a broad musical spectrum, that celebrates both our choral traditions and the vibrant world of modern music as well as spiritually uplifting and reflective music. He also discusses religious and ethical issues of the week with faith representatives. This week, Aled says Good Morning Sunday to Bonnie Tyler and Mal Pope who have collaborated on Mal's new musical. And Charlie Landsborough discusses the week's news from a faith and ethics perspective and gives the Moment of Reflection.
Bonnie Tyler & Mal Pope
Bonnie Tyler & Mal Pope have both enjoyed success in their own right. Singer Bonnie Tyler enjoyed two global hits with Total Eclipse Of The Heart and Holding Out For A Hero and continues to delight audiences today with her distinctive vocal style. And Mal Pope enjoyed a solo career, recording on Elton John's label before turning to composing for the theatre. Both based in South Wales, they are currently involved in Mal's new musical Cappuccino Girls - for which Bonnie sings the title track.
Faith Guest - Charlie Landsborough
Country and folk singer Charlie Landsborough grew up in Birkenhead and was introduced to music at an early age. His father was a local ballad singer, known as the ‘silver voiced tenor’ and Charlie’s elder brothers brought home country music records and guitars from their trips abroad as merchant sailors. But it wasn’t until Charlie was in his mid-50s, that he was able to fulfill his childhood ambitions of being a singer.
Since then, he's sold over 1 million albums and enjoyed success all over the world. And as he’s got older, his Catholic faith has been strengthened.
Sunday Spotlight - Thomas Spencer-Wortley
‘The feeling I get when I sing is just wonderful. We really are blessed when we can participate in things that give us real fulfillment'. The words of the Sunday Spotlight artist this week, Thomas Spencer-Wortley.
Thomas first started singing at the age of four, when he attended Sunday School at his local Church and as a teenager he sang with both the local amateur dramatics society and the National Youth Choir. Thomas went on to study singing at music college and his first professional break came when he was offered the part of Schlomo in the UK Tour of Fame the Musical in 2007. When he began to think about recording an album, he ended up doing it all himself – even setting up a record label and production company – a scenario which enables him to manage every aspect of the performance process. “I've dreamt about being signed to a record label, only I never envisaged it would be my own!”
Aled plays the title track, Credere, written by Thomas’ brother Oliver and taken from his new album which is released later this month.
