Synopsis

Put you hips in gear and get ready for the Drivetime Monday Mince! And Chris speaks to the creator of the world's most famous craftsman and inspiration to junior DIY-ers everywhere - Bob the Builder.

Bob The Builder!

He’s been coming in on time and on budget for ten years this Thursday and, what’s more, he’s always done it with a smile on his little clay face. With his cry of ‘can we fix it, yes we can!’ he’s as much about inspiration as he is about construction. So, we spoke to Bob’s builder, Keith Chapman of HiT Entertainment about the construction creation who inspired a generation of junior DIY-ers! Bob le Bricoleur!

Monday 7 September - Question

When I was younger, I could buy cola bottles, rings, fried eggs, 1/2 bears, fizzy cola bottles etc. Now they are all branded under Haribo. Were they always Haribo or have Haribo taken over lots of smaller sweet manufacturers? Martin Hughes, Three Counties

Monday 7th September - Answer

Haribo is a German company which is best known for Gummy Bears, which it came up with. I've had a chat with Tim Richardson, who's the author of Sweets: The History of Temptation, and he says that the sweets mentioned by Martin are all generic - in other words there's no copyright on them and nothing stopping any company from making them. So Haribo didn't have to buy any sweet manufacturers to start making them when they really began to make it in the British market about ten years ago. A lot of these sweets were definitely different we were young - cola bottles for instance were flatter and floppy, and they didn't have that coating of sugar on them. Whereas the ones sold by Haribo are what's known as acidulated sweets - which means they've got that sour sugary coating that's so popular these days.
