Synopsis

In the fourth programme of the series, MasterChef's Gregg Wallace examines the effect of the recession on the British food economy. It is our second biggest spend and the downturn is affecting not only how much we fork out on food but also what we are putting in our shopping baskets. Gregg looks at these shifting trends in our shopping habits and how now, more than ever, we are dictating what the shops sell to us.

Gregg visits supermarkets, independent retailers, frozen food stores and producers to get an overview of what's happening in our vast food economy. From bargain ranges to ethically produced foods and top brands, it's all change in the aisles. Gregg asks how much our recession habits will stay with us after the green shoots have sprouted.
