Synopsis

Simon Mayo sits in for Chris and will be joined for a live session from Squeeze! And following the weekend's test match we speak to England's Barmy Army co-founder Paul Burnham.

The Barmy Army

After an extremely average opening Ashes performance over the weekend you’d be forgiven for wondering, ‘just who are all those people still cheering every single shot as if it were a 6’? This merry band of eternal optimists call themselves the Barmy Army so we went bowled a few overs with one of their founding members, Paul Burnham.

The Barmy Army

Squeeze!

Simon was joined for a very special live session by Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford, otherwsie known as the legendary Squeeze! They perfomed two classic tracks Pulling Mussels(From a Shell) and Labelled With Love... with a little help from their friends Sally Traffic and Simon!

Monday 13 July - Question

Why are all track events run anti-clockwise around the track - athletics, speed skating, greyhound racing, cycling, speedway, stockcar racing, truck racing. I can't think of one that is not. How did it all start and why do we not go clockwise? I bet this one beats you! Russell Gallman, Devon

Monday 13 July - Answer

First of all, not ALL track events ARE anti-clockwise - thanks to everyone for their texts pointing out that banger-racing, some grand prix races, and some horse races go clockwise. All ATHLETIC events ARE run anti-clockwise though, for the simple reason that the the International Association of Athletics Federation, specifies that for all the tracks it gives licences to, "the direction of running is with the left-hand inside". As for WHY that's the case - there are various theories, to do with the heart being on the left side of our bodies, the fact that most people are right-handed etc etc. But I reckon it's just because they had to pick one direction to be the industry standard, and that happens to be the one they picked.
