Synopsis
This week, Aled says Good Morning Sunday to Dame Ellen MacArthur about her life on and off shore, and why she set up the Ellen MacArthur Trust.
There's also live music from the New Seekers and Principal Chaplain of the Sailors' Society, the Revd David Potterton, discusses the week's news from a faith and ethics perspective and gives the Moment of Reflection.
Dame Ellen MacArthur
Aled's guest for Sea Sunday is Dame Ellen MacArthur. In 2005, Dame Ellen broke the world record to become the fastest person to sail around the world singlehanded, and on her return to England, was the youngest person to be made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. She first came to many people’s attention when she completed the gruelling Vendee Globe race in 2001, but she had been breaking world records before that.
Despite being involved in a 4 month, 2000 mile trip around the British Isles, stopping off at 17 ports along the way, Dame Ellen stepped ashore at Southampton to tell Aled a little more about her life, her work and her charity, the Ellen MacArthur Trust.
Faith Guest - the Revd David Potterton
The faith guest on Sea Sunday is the Revd David Potterton, Principal Chaplain of the Sailors’ Society. Being an island nation, the UK is dependent on seafarers for much of our food and fuel - 95% of our goods are transported by sea. And Sea Sunday is the day set aside to remember seafarers and to thank them for the difficult and dangerous work that they do, marked by special services in churches.
The Sailors’ Society is one of a number of charities that exist to support seafarers. It works with 1.2million seafarers, in 100 ports across the world, addressing their practical and spiritual needs, irrespective of their beliefs or nationality. David is well placed to understand the needs of sailors, having started his career in the Royal Marines Band Service, before turning to ordained ministry.
Moment Of Reflection
Blessed are those who worry and grieve for those they love who are impossibly far away, for they shall be comforted and connected. And blessed are those who comfort and connect them, for they shall see the light of relief where once there was darkness and fear.
Blessed are those who know the terror of storms, for they shall see Jesus at peace in the midst of confusion. And blessed are those who show the face of the serene Jesus to those who are lost and bewildered, for they shall see the mysterious power of God.
Blessed are those who never hear their own language in a strange land, for they shall be taught the language of love. And blessed are those who speak the language of love to those who are lonely, for they shall be the messengers of God.
Blessings on the sailors.
Blessings on those who serve them.
Blessed be the name of Jesus.
Written by Adrian Plass for Sea Sunday.
The Revd Dr David Wilkinson
This week sees the 40th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11 from the Kennedy Space Center on 16th July 1969, the first manned space flight to land on the moon. On 20th July, Mission Commander Neil Armstrong descended from the lunar module onto the Moon's surface and made history, speaking those immortal words... "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
The Revd Dr David Wilkinson has PhDs in both Theology and Astrophysics and embraces the fields of both science and religion with ease. David is the Principal of St John’s College, Durham and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Following his PhD in the study of star formation and the evolution of galaxies, he trained for the Methodist ministry. His current work is based on the relationship between science and religion, and Christianity within contemporary culture, and includes a book on the spirituality of the Star Wars films.
Sunday Spotlight - Bap Kennedy
This week, the Sunday Spotlight falls on a seasoned performer who celebrates 30 years in the music business this year. Bap Kennedy’s latest solo album Howl On was inspired by the 40th anniversary of the Moon Landings and Bap’s childhood memories of the event. But it was the song Brave Captain that caught our eye for Sea Sunday.
Bap grew up in Belfast, and has performed and recorded all over the world, collaborating with artists such as Van Morrison, Nanci Griffiths, Herbie Flowers, Shane Macgowan, and Pete Doherty, and his brother, Brian Kennedy. For Sea Sunday, Aled plays Brave Captain.
