Thursday 9 July - Question 1
People working on the road wear safety jackets that are yellow, whereas people working on the railway have orange ones. Why do they use different colours and which one is actually safer?
Thursday 9 July - Answer 1
I had a lot of people getting in touch about this - so thanks to everyone for their offerings. I've also had a chat with Dave Fairclough, who's a Railway Safety Supervisor for a company called Total Access. He says yellow jackets could be mistaken for a yellow signal, or even a green one - because at a distance they can look green, which means go, which can lead to a train going through a signal when it shouldn't. Also, as the front of trains are painted yellow so workers can see them from a distance, a group of workers WEARING yellow could be mistaken for the front of a train, which could cause confusion to drivers. As for which is safer, yellow probably is more visible, but because of the reasons I've just mentioned, overall, orange is safer for the railways.

Thursday 9 July - Question 2
Why do painters and decorators always wear white overalls? Surely a darker colour would be more suitable for what is a messy and sometimes dirty job? Heidi, Manchester
Thursday 9 July - Answer 2
There are several theories about this - and I really don’t think there's one particular reason, rather a number of reasons that mean it just makes sense. White denotes cleanliness and professionalism - and it distinguishes painters from other craftspeople. Also, most of the time painters are dealing with white paint - so it shows less on white overalls. And finally - and this is a bit like why babies are more likely to be dressed in white sleepsuits than coloured ones - it's easy to wash them higher temperature and there's no danger that the colour will fade.
