Synopsis
Claudia Winkleman rounds up the week's arts action.
Fans of Glen David Gold's Carter Beats the Devil have been waiting since 2001 for his new novel. He talks about his new book, Sunnyside, which recreates the wild, early days of Hollywood and charts Charlie Chaplin's dramatic rise from rags to riches. It's also the time of the First World War, the Russian Revolution and a new superpower called America. Find out if the book is another page turner, when Claudia delivers her verdict.
This week's show also features the poet Benjamin Zephaniah, choreographer Matthew Bourne, and Ricky Gervais talks about his next film Cemetery Junction.
5 Reasons To Go Out & About
Winchester Hat Fair runs till Sunday is a free street arts festival including circus, cabaret, and contemporary dance. It started as a busker's festival where performers passed around a hat to collect a donation after their show, hence the name.
Tomorrow sees the start of the Cheltenham Music Festival which is celebrating its 65 year. Over the next fortnight events include a celebration of 250 years of the string quartet and music by composers with Jewish heritage in honour of Mendelssohn.
The York Museum Gardens is home to the Royal Entomological Society Insect Festival 2009. It’s on tomorrow and is a celebration of insect life aimed at traders, exhibitors, wildlife groups and the general public with talks and presentations taking place throughout the day.
Durham International Festival starts tomorrow and is a two-week celebration of internationally acclaimed brass artists and ensembles featuring everything from traditional brass bands to afro-beat, and Balkan brass madness to classical ensembles. Expect over 40 events, many of which are free.
On Sunday at 2pm there’s a procession created by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller as part of this year’s Manchester International Festival. Starting at the Liverpool Road end of Deansgate, expect the noise, colour and excitement of a typical parade but with a Mancunian twist including a musical tribute to the world’s first fish and chip shop in Oldham.
Good Giggle Guide
Each week we’re offering a comedy fix on the show in our new feature - the Good Giggle Guide.
