    Michael Longley was born in Belfast in 1939. He read Classics at Trinity College, Dublin, taught in schools for many years and worked for the Arts Council of Northern Ireland for two decades. He received the Queen’s Gold medal for Poetry in 2001. Longley is a prolific writer of short, lyrical poems distinguished by their sharp images of the natural world.
