Ansuman Biswas is Manchester Museum's first resident Hermit. He will live in its Victorian Gothic tower for forty days and forty nights alone except for a computer modem connecting him to the virtual world.

Wednesday 27th May - Question from Angela Gabbott from Oxford:

I would like to know why, when you get something in your eye (eyelash or dust) it hurts like mad, but when you put a contact lens in, it doesn't hurt at all. Also how many people in the UK are contact lens wearers and which sort of lens is the most popular?

Wednesday 27th May - Answer from Steph McGovern:

Simon Rodwell - the secretary general of the Association of Contact Lens Manufacturers told me that anything that enters your eye is a foreign body which your eye takes time to adapt to. Contact lens don't hurt because they have a lot of money spent on them to make sure that they're smooth and comfortable to wear. This is unlike dust or eyelashes which are rough and can scratch the eye, which causes the pain. There are roughly 3.5 million contact lens wearers in the UK and the most popular type of lens is daily disposables.
