  • Poem: Ear Say

Did Vincent Van Gogh chop his own ear off?
Was the lughole down the plughole his blow?
Or – on a starry, starry night did he get into a fight
Singin’ – ‘ere we Gaugin, ‘ere we Gaugin, ‘ere we go?

  • Poem: I Was There

I was there when it happened, when history was made
I was in on the act, centre stage
I was rubbernecking by the paparazzi crush
I was there at tomorrow’s front page
I was there when Tony Blair said sorry –
“Hey, y’know, I was such a numpty invading Iraq”
I was there when bankers wore sackcloth and ashes
As they handed their bonuses back
I was there when Tony Benn moved in to Number Ten
I was there at that glorious dawn
When Buckingham Palace became a museum
And the people’s Republic was born
I was there when Simon Cowell just melted like a witch
When Sting hung up his lute and waved bye-bye
I was there when Gordon Ramsay ate himself
And nobody gave a fig why
I was there when oompah-loompahs stole David Cameron’s bike
When James Blunt became a Trappist monk
I was there when the Taliban started drinking scotch
And danced their sandals off to funk
I was there when Peaches Geldof was sent into space
On a one-way ticket to the moon
I was there when St Johnstone won the Champions’ League
    When Madonna married Geoff Hoon
Yes, I was there when it happened, I was there in my dreams
On every twelfth of never hitherto
And I was there when a black man took the White House
So sometimes dreams really do come true
