Synopsis

Philip Dodd talks to Nandan Nilekani, an Indian computer technology guru who has been described as the 'Bill Gates of Bangalore', about his new vision for his nation and how it will shape the global future in the 21st century. He describes how many of the things that were once considered India's burdens - its huge population, its size, its young population - are now its economic advantages.

And Philip visits a re-creation at London's Tate Britain of illustrator, poet and thinker William Blake's first and only solo exhibition of 1809.

JG BALLARD

Philip Dodd and his guests, Will Self and Michael Moorcock discuss the life and work of the novelist JG Ballard who died at the weekend. They look back at a writer who was one of the most original and influential of all modern writers, whose work crossed from science fiction to mainstream literature.

JG Ballard’s Miracles of Life: Shanghai to Shepperton: an Autobiography is published by HarperPerennial.

NANDAN NILEKANI

Nandan Nilekani, whose new book Imagining India is a businessman’s take on the history and culture of India, looks deep into the nation’s past to try to predict and understand its increasingly complex and extraordinary future.

Nandan Nilekani is one of the British Council’s 45 invited Indian writers taking part in India 09: Through Fresh Eyes.

Imagining India: The Idea of a Renewed Nation is published by Penguin Press.
