Panorama looks at a proposed amnesty for hundreds of thousands of long-standing illegal immigrants, offering them the right to work and full citizenship.

London Mayor Boris Johnson is in favour of the idea, and 93 MPs from across the country support it.

But it is a big ask with the UK in the grip of a credit crunch, and amid protests calling for British jobs for British workers.

    Post-Second World War West Indian immigration to the UK had begun in earnest in 1948 with the arrival of the Empire Windrush ship.

    By 1967 a generation born in the UK was coming of age. The problem of still being deemed a foreigner in the country of your birth - with all the prejudice that comes with it - was beginning to take centre stage.

    In April 1967, Panorama travelled to Liverpool to see how this second generation were faring.
