The Fast Show - sketch show pioneers
The Fast Show was created by Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson. The pair first met at university and worked together for years writing for and appearing with Harry Enfield. After seeing a cut-down version of ‘Harry Enfield and Chums’ the writing duo were inspired to take a new approach to sketch shows, bringing characters on just long enough to establish a situation and say a catchphrase before whisking them off again.
The character driven sketches proved to be groundbreaking and The Fast Show was born. It first aired in 1994, spanning three series and a special ‘Last Fast Show Ever’ in 2000. The team took their last bow, live on stage in November 2002. Some of the original cast including, Paul Whitehouse, Charlie Higson, Simon Day, Mark Williams and Arabella Weir treated fans to all their favourite characters and catchphrases, together with brand new routines.
The 'Suit You' tailors measure their last inside leg, Ted and Ralph take their final walk off into the sunset, the 13th Duke of Wymbourne continues his philandering ways and Swiss Toni sells his last car.
And of course there are appearances from Billy Bleach, No offence - Arabella's South African perfume seller, Brilliant! - Paul's juvenile lad, Dave Angel Eco warrior, Colin the office prankster (with his office girlfriend, Noreen), Ron Manager and Tommy Cockles.
This season I are mostly wearing a thong, Does my bum look big in this? Ooh, suits you Sir! No offence, I’ll get my coat, Hardest game in the world. These are just some of the catchphrases that remain etched in our minds and yet another reason for the show’s continued popularity.
