BSL magazine. See Hear is on a bit of a health kick. We've found that smoking and drinking can have unusual effects on your hearing, but not in the way that you might think. If you're thinking of taking up a new sport, you could follow Dave Blackwell's example. A former champion weightlifter, he's now turned to javelin, shot put and discus with the hope of qualifying for the Deaflympics. Plus a man whose passion for music was his life's work, but since going deaf in one ear overnight, music no longer excites him as it did. A year later, he reflects on how his perception of music has changed.
