Retail guru Mary Portas is back to save the small fashion boutique from extinction. In this series she comes to the aid of five independent shops that are fighting for survival. But retail is a ruthless business. Can Mary turn things round when competition from the high street is getting ever fiercer?
Cardiff presents Mary with her most difficult challenge to date. Kelvin Evans, owner of a boutique and bar called Floyds, has very firm ideas about the retail business. Run by his partner Sharon Hunt, Floyds sells cheap end-of-line clothes and tacky accessories. The women of Cardiff are giving Floyds a wide berth, but Kelvin cannot understand why. Not one to mince her words, Mary lays it on the line and tempers flare.
Mary is convinced the shop should be targeting the fashion-conscious twentysomething crowd and asks Kelvin and Sharon to have a go at styling Miss Wales and her friends for a night out. But it is a disaster, and the young girls end up looking more streetwalk than catwalk. When events come to a head and Mary decides she can no longer work with Kelvin, Sharon has to step up. But does she have the confidence and ability to turn Floyds around?
