Synopsis

Current affairs programme presented by Jeremy Vine. Are schoolchildren in England given too many exams? The Government says that they help to drive standards up; but lots of teachers believe the tests put unnecessary pressure on children and schools - and spoil their education. Who's got the right answer? Vivian White reports.

Tested to Destruction Cartoon

Panorama asked children from two schools to draw the creature they imagined when thinking about their tests.

One of the schools was in Liverpool where they, like the rest of England, have SATs.

The other school is in Deeside, Wales, where they abolished SATs a few years ago and the tests they have now aren't related to league tables.

Tested To Destruction

As 11-year-old across England begin their SATs tests at school, Panorama asks whether schoolchildren are facing too much exam pressure.
