The urban environment has not been traditionally associated with wildlife, but experts are finding that the city can provide a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. Conservationists fear that many of our most precious species could be lost in the rush to build more houses. But as Tom Heap discovers, this is not just a case of environmentalists against planners.
