Returning from the Crusades to a country he hardly recognises, Brother Cadfael finds intrigue and deception almost as soon as he lands in the court of his master Roger Mauduit.
Nigel Anthony reads Ellis Peters' mediaeval mystery.
Ellis Peters was the pen name of Edith Pargeter, the prolific and popular author of the Brother Cadfael medieval mysteries. The monk led a crusading and seafaring life until he returned home in 1120 at the end of the Crusades. He was at that time in his 40s with a mobile and often violent past behind him - and no future plan in mind other than a need for a new and different challenge. This story tells of the moment and the events which led to his momentous decision of entering the Benedictine Order in Shrewsbury. Edith Pargeter died in 1995.
