Sport Coverage & FAQs

BBC Radio Wales offers a range of sport through the week and at weekends, across FM, AM, digital radio / TV and online. This page will guide you through what you will be able to hear, depending on what team you support, or what area of Wales you’re in.

  • BREAKING NEWS: CHANGES TO DAB (digital radio) in December 2013

At the beginning of December 2013 we've rolled out an improvement to the way our football splits work. Up until now, if Cardiff and Swansea were playing at the same time, those games would only be available on FM in the Cardiff and Swansea areas on FM only, with digital radio (DAB) listeners in those areas receiving a different match (eg Newport or Wrexham).

We're pleased to say that’s now changed, with local FM & digital radio in Swansea and Cardiff matching up.

So on Radio Wales Sport on Wednesday 4 December for example, Stoke v Cardiff is on FM & DAB in south east Wales, while Swansea v Newcastle is on FM & DAB in the Swansea area. Listeners to AM, Digital TV and FM & DAB across the rest of Wales will hear football and Ashes chat through til 10. Listeners online (via the website, iPlayer or the iPlayer Radio app) will also hear this AM "version" of Radio Wales.

We'll be fully updating this Listening Guide later this week with a comprehensive run-down of what's on when, in your area.

  • To find out what games are on when...

  • Cardiff City

    FM

BBC Radio Wales has rights to broadcast every Cardiff City game home and away on FM in south east Wales (an area which approximately stretches west to Porthcawl and Maesteg, north to Abergavenny). Click here to find the FM frequency in your area.

We do not have the rights to broadcast Cardiff City games on FM outside south east Wales, unless that game is also being broadcast across the whole of the UK on 5Live or 5Live Sports Extra. In which case, we will offer Radio Wales commentary to all, or as wide a range as possible of, our frequencies.

    Digital Radio / DAB

We are working to replicate our FM coverage on DAB in south east Wales, although we will not be able to do this at the start of the new season. Initially, DAB will receive the same feed as AM & TV.

    AM & TV

When multiple games are on FM frequencies across Wales, then AM & Digital TV will act as a scores service. We do not have the rights to broadcast Cardiff City commentary on AM and Digital TV, unless that game is also being broadcast across the whole of the UK on 5Live or 5Live Sports Extra. In which case, we will offer Radio Wales commentary to all, or as wide a range as possible of, our frequencies.

    Online

We do not have online rights for Cardiff City games in the Premier League and the League Cup. We have UK rights for FA Cup games. You can listen to games via the BBC Sport Wales website but not here on the BBC Radio Wales website or iPlayer (which are available worldwide).

  • Newport County

    FM

When Cardiff City aren’t playing, BBC Radio Wales will broadcast Newport County games on FM in south east Wales (an area which approximately stretches west towards Porthcawl and Maesteg, north to Abergavenny. Click here to find the FM frequency in your area.). There will also be a number of occasions across the season when Newport commentary will be available across all frequencies. Check this webpage to keep up to date with our plans.

If Newport are the only team playing, we may make the game available across the whole of Wales on FM.

    DAB

We are working to replicate our FM coverage on DAB in south east Wales, although for the start of the new season, DAB will receive the same feed as AM & TV.

    AM & TV

When multiple games are on FM frequencies across Wales, then AM & Digital TV will act as a scores service. So if Cardiff City and Newport County are playing at the same time, the best way to keep in touch with the County match is via 882AM or Sky, Virgin, Freeview or Freesat.

    Online

We do not have online rights for Newport County games in the Football League and the League Cup this season. We have UK rights for FA Cup games. You can listen to games via the BBC Sport Wales website but not here on BBC Radio Wales website (which is available worldwide).

  • Swansea City

    FM

BBC Radio Wales has rights to broadcast every Swansea City game home and away on FM in the Swansea area (an area which approximately stretches east towards Neath, west towards Carmarthen, and north towards Llandovery). Click here to find the FM frequency in your area.

We do not have the rights to broadcast Swansea City games on FM outside the Swansea area, unless that game is also being broadcast across the whole of the UK on 5Live or 5Live Sports Extra. In which case, we will offer Radio Wales commentary to all, or as wide a range as possible of, our frequencies.

    DAB

We are working to replicate our FM coverage on DAB in the Swansea area, although we will not be able to do this at the start of the new season. Initially, DAB will receive the same feed as AM & TV. Find out if you can receive Digital Radio in your area here.

    AM & TV

We do not have the rights to broadcast Swansea City commentary on AM and Digital TV, unless that game is also being broadcast across the whole of the UK on 5Live or 5Live Sports Extra. In which case, we will offer Radio Wales commentary to all, or as wide a range as possible of, our frequencies.

BBC Radio Wales has rights to broadcast every Wrexham game, home and away, on DAB in north east Wales (an area which includes Wrexham, Flintshire and northern Denbighshire).

    Online

We have online streaming rights for Wrexham games. These games will always be available via the BBC Sport Wales website and in most instances on the Radio Wales website / iPlayer Radio, depending on which programming is on our other frequencies at the time.

  • What do I hear on the Listen Live webstream when sport commentary is on-air?

When sport is featured on certain Radio Wales FM frequencies but non-sport programming features on others, it is this other programming you will hear on the Radio Wales live webstream.

If sports commentaries are featured on all frequencies, listeners to the webstream will hear a "blanking" message explaining the situation. During this time, listeners can tune in to the station via FM, AM, or digital to continue listening, or continue following most sports fixtures online via text updates on the BBC Sport website.

Should commentaries be available online, but restricted to listeners in the UK, we are able to offer these commentaries on the BBC Sport Wales website, at: bbc.co.uk/walessport

Listeners in Wales will always be able to hear live sport on Radio Wales across FM, AM (Medium Wave), on digital radio and TV; you'll find full details here on the BBC Radio Wales website.
