The Rock

Action thriller about a war hero who holds San Francisco to ransom, and the scientist charged with stopping him. The deranged general and his men take the disused prison island of Alcatraz, threatening to unleash chemical warheads unless their demands are met. The authorities counter with a covert mission to get chemical weapons expert Stanley onto 'The Rock', but they require the help of taciturn long-term convict John Mason, the only man to escape the prison alive.
