About the show

Classical Collection: The mid-morning slot on Radio 3 with Sarah Walker and James Jolly - a journey through great music in fine recordings, both contemporary and historic. Every Monday there will be a complete performance of the Building a Library critic's choice from the previous Saturday, and the 'Group of Three' on Tuesdays and Thursdays gives an insight into performers' interpretations or composers' treatments by comparing and contrasting three shorter pieces.

Haydn 2009

On Wednesdays and Fridays in 2009 there's Radio 3's complete cycle of Symphonies by Joseph Haydn, the Austrian composer who is regarded as “the father of the symphony”. The range of performances covers the historically-informed (Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Franz Bruggen), complete symphonic cycles (Adam Fischer, Antal Dorati), archive gems (Wilhelm Furtwangler, Bruno Walter), the historically important (Derek Solomons, Leslie Jones), and well-loved (Colin Davis, Thomas Beecham), and some of the symphonies will be performed live in Classical Collection by the BBC Orchestras.

Note: Inevitably, many discs we play are unavailable, or they may currently be available but under different disc numbers or on different labels from the ones listed in the daily playlists.
