  • Frequently Asked Questions

    What is the theme music?

It is an excerpt from "Madrigal – Nocturne" from "La Cheminée du Roi René" – suite for wind quintet (Op.205) by Darius Milhaud, it is performed by members of the BBC Concert Orchestra

Why I can't find a commercially available recording of the pieces you play?

Here on Through the Night we never use commercial CDs, instead we broadcast specially recorded sessions and concerts from both the BBC archives and our colleagues at radio stations across Europe, Australia, South Korea and Canada.

While this means that we have access to many unique performances unavailable elsewhere on Radio 3, it does mean that our listeners are normally unable to buy the same recording on CD.

Why is so much of the music recorded in Europe?

Through the Night is produced by Radio 3 and transmitted across Europe thanks to a partnership with the European Broadcasting Union. Our partner radio stations supply us with concerts which we use to create 2190 hours of radio a year. The programme information running orders are distributed in advance to Europe where the presenters in each country insert their script in their own language.

Do contact us if there a piece that you would like to hear again.
