Steve Urquhart decided that he wanted to work in radio at the age of seven... and promptly set about doing so.
Community, student, hospital and commercial radio helped him towards his first proper BBC job as a producer and presenter at his local station, Radio Cumbria. In 2005 he moved south to BBC WM in Birmingham, then even further south to London as a producer at Radio 3, and to Radio 4 in 2008, where he produced material for the announcers but never spoke on air.
Then he went to prison.
Steve became head of station sound at the acclaimed National Prison Radio in HMP Brixton, where he taught radio production to serving inmates, and won Gold at the Sony Radio Academy Awards. Now freelance, Steve not only introduces Radio 4 programmes, he also makes some of them – often involving prisoners and ex-offenders, whom he continues to teach.
Away from radio Steve is a musician / composer and spent some years as a club DJ... but these days he's more likely to be heard reading the Shipping Forecast at that time of night.
