Information and Support
If you, or someone you know, have been affected by the issues raised in this programme, the following organisations can help:
Rape Crisis (England and Wales)
Rape Crisis (England and Wales) is a registered charity and the national umbrella organisation for Rape Crisis Centres in England and Wales. On their website you will find information about rape and sexual violence and details of your nearest Rape Crisis Centre if you need support.
SARCs (Sexual Assault Referral Centres) are specialist 24/7 services for people who have been raped or sexually assaulted. They aim to be one-stop services, providing the following under one roof: medical care and forensic examination following assault/rape, counselling and – in some locations – sexual health services. Services are free of charge and provided to women, men, young people and children (although not all centres may currently be able to assist children). SARCs are mostly able to assist in the immediate aftermath of an assault, but do not offer long term services that are provided by Rape Crisis Centres. They can store the forensic results until you make up your mind whether to report to the police or not.
Rape Crisis National Helpline
The Rape Crisis National Helpline can offer help and support to female survivors of rape or sexual abuse over 14 years of age, however long ago it happened. They can also offer help and support to partners, friends and family. National Freephone helpline: 0808 802 9999 (daily from midday to 2.30pm and 7.00pm to 9,30pm).
Rape Crisis Scotland
Rape Crisis Scotland provides a national rape crisis helpline for anyone affected by sexual violence, no matter when or how it happened. The helpline offers free and confidential crisis support and information. They can also put you in touch with local rape crisis centres or other services for ongoing support. Contact them by phone on 0808 801 03 02 (6.00pm to midnight, 7 days a week).
NEXUS NI works across Northern Ireland to respond to the needs of survivors of sexual violence. They offer counselling to victims of rape, sexual violence and sexual abuse. Contact your local Nexus office by phone or email to arrange counselling or to ask for more information.
