Who are DIY SOS?

DIY SOS: The Big Build is the BBC’s flagship renovation programme which has been running for 17 years attracting up to 5 million viewers per episode in its primetime slot on BBC One. The award winning show, presented by Nick Knowles and his team of Billy, Mark, Chris and Jules, takes on extremely Big Builds for people and communities that need this kind of help.

We have helped over 80 families and large scale builds for communities across the UK.

We have helped over 80 families and large scale builds for communities across the UK. These include:

  • A centre for a children’s charity with special needs in Peterborough, for Children in Need in 2013

  • In 2015, Princes William and Harry helped volunteers renovate an entire street in Manchester and homes for injured service veterans helping to bring the community back to life.

  • In 2016 we built a respite centre for young carers in Blackpool for Children in Need.

  • In autumn 2017 we completed a centre and transitional housing for young people leaving care in Swansea, Wales for a charity called the Roots Foundation, Wales which is supported by Children in Need.

How do we do it?

The builds we undertake are possible because the construction materials, supplies, furniture (in fact everything that goes into a finished building) are given to the projects by companies who want to help. It will be built by volunteers. We build to the highest standards we possibly can.

We would welcome as many local people as possible to take part so PLEASE get in touch if you are interested in volunteering diysos@bbc.co.uk

Who are the architects?

Sarah Featherstone and Jeremy Young are award winning architects who have built community spaces and have volunteered to work on the proposal. You can find out more about their work at Featherstone Young.

Here is a link to an Arts and Activity Centre in east London they built for a homeless charity.

The new buildings we’re proposing will be completely funded by donations and generous volunteers and will be a postive legacy for the local community for many years to come.

Currently based at their temporary home in a car park, they will get a new purpose-built gym and DIY SOS will tell the remarkable story of an unsung local treasure.

The Dale Youth Amateur Boxing Club was founded 60 years ago and was based in Grenfell Tower since 1999. Over the years, it successfully nurtured 200 Amateur Boxing Association champions.

Dale Youth helped hone the talents of the 2008 Beijing Olympic gold medal winner James DeGale, as well as current world champion George Groves.

DIY SOS: Grenfell – The Community Space

The community in and around Grenfell has always been very strong and close knit and there is a real need for low cost community space. Working with the community and volunteers, DIY SOS will build a brand new multi-use community space, which will be available to the whole community to use for a range of activities. Westway Trust will ensure the spaces are accessible and affordable for the whole community.
