BBC One takes a fascinating
and unique look at the Prince
of Wales as he turns 60

To mark the 60th birthday of HRH The Prince of Wales in November, BBC One shows a special documentary that gives new and revealing insights into one of the most influential men in Britain.

Over the course of a year, the BBC – with unprecedented access – has observed the Prince at work and on duty in the UK and abroad, and at home at Clarence House in London, Highgrove in Gloucestershire and Birkhall in Aberdeenshire.

The result is Charles At 60 – The Passionate Prince, a fascinating and unique look at the work of the Prince through the causes closest to his heart, his many charities and the ever-increasing demands made on him as heir to the throne.

Many people have a view about the Prince but very few know him well. This film presents a rare opportunity to see at first hand what he has made of the opportunities handed down to him, and to hear directly from the Prince about what motivates him to work on the wide variety of causes – sometimes unfashionable, sometimes controversial – to which he is committed.

Rolf Harris makes an emotional journey in the footsteps of his father
Rolf Harris makes an emotional
journey in the footsteps of
his father

More than one million people lost their lives in Britain during the Great War, and in this hour-long special of My Family At War, Rolf Harris and Kirsty Wark retrace their relatives' steps to discover their own family stories of the time.

Rolf takes an emotional voyage when he follows his father and uncle's journey through Northern France where they both came to fight with the Anzacs.

On the boat over to France, Rolf recalls how, in 1969, he had chart-topping success with the song Two Little Boys, but never understood why his aunt found it too emotional to listen to. Rolf retraces his father and uncle's movements to the battlefields where they fought side by side. On learning their full histories he, at last, fully understands why his song had so much resonance for his aunt.

On a tour around a local school, Rolf witnesses the enormous gratitude the staff and pupils have, thanking Australia daily for their help in the war. Rolf is moved to tears, but now knows what his father and uncle suffered was not in vain.

"I didn't really think I would be so moved because it all happened 90-odd years ago. But it has been incredibly emotional, this journey, and I'm glad I made it. Two Little Boys will never be the same for me again; when I sing it, it will have added poignancy because of the story that's developed here," says Rolf.

Meanwhile, Kirsty traces the story of her great uncle, James Allan Wark, who joined up to fight at the start of the First World War. He was sent to France, where he wrote a series of moving letters home. Kirsty wants to find out about the gruesome reality of his war that he was not including in his letters.

Kirsty admits: "Learning all about this period in my family's history really has connected me to it. It really is so important and I actually feel a little ashamed that I had never been to that part of France before to see the graves and battlefields. I feel it is now part of the tapestry of my life."

A Woman In Love And War – Vera Brittain

Day and time to be confirmed BBC ONE
www.bbc.co.uk/remembrance

Jo Brand retraces Vera Brittain's tragic story that tells of the confusion, hope, agony and suspense of war, as told through the eyes of a woman whose loves were in the trenches.

Vera lost all the men who had ever meant anything to her during the course of the war, and with their loss, her life was irrevocably changed. She went from being a bright privileged girl, with everything to play for, to a girl whose world was torn apart by the grief of losing, what felt to her, to be her entire generation.

Unable to concentrate on studies, Vera left Somerville College at the end of her first year to become a volunteer nurse (VAD), first in her home town of Buxton, Derbyshire, and later in Camberwell, south-east London. Her journey as a nurse took her to Malta and eventually close to the Front in France, where she nursed both British and German casualties.

This one-off documentary follows not only the emotional experiences of a young woman suffering at home while those she loved were at the Front, but also looks into the conditions nurses faced both at home and abroad, and the contribution they made to the war effort.

Visiting key locations in Britain and France and drawing on Vera's own letters and memoirs, Jo discovers the story of how she and her contemporaries were tragically caught up in The Great War. In her first television interview of any substance on the subject, Vera's daughter, politician Shirley Williams, features alongside other contributors to bring Vera's story to life.

This programme is part of 1918-2008 – Ninety Years Of Remembrance, a special season of programmes on the BBC marking the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

BBC TWO Unplaced Week 46
Oceans Ep 1/8
Day and time to be confirmed BBC TWO
www.bbc.co.uk/oceans
Feature

Explorer Paul Rose leads a team of ocean experts
in a series of global science expeditions (l-r: Philippe
Cousteau, Dr Lucy Blue, Tooni Mahto and Paul Rose)

The hidden stories of the planet's oceans are told in a new series for BBC Two – Oceans.

Explorer Paul Rose leads a team of ocean experts in a series of global science expeditions. With him, maritime archaeologist Dr Lucy Blue investigates our past and our relationship with the sea, exploring shipwrecks and lost civilisations; marine biologist and Oceanographer Tooni Mahto seeks the extraordinary life in our oceans today; and environmentalist Philippe Cousteau Jr looks to the future of our oceans and charts the way they're changing.

Filmed in High Definition in some of the most beautiful, diverse and threatened seas on our planet, the team travels across the world to the Southern Ocean, the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, the Sea of Cortez, the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean, to dive the depths of the world's seas and oceans.

In this opening episode the team examines the impact man is having in the Sea of Cortez and discovers how it is changing.

The Sea of Cortez is rich with life. One third of Earth's marine mammal species are found here, alongside more than 800 species of fish. But these waters are in a state of flux. As commercial fishing has increased alongside tourism and industry, this fertile sea is now classified as endangered.

Diving in search of one of its apex predators, the Hammerhead Shark, the team discovers one of the winners in the war of change – the Humboldt Squid. This species didn't exist in this sea 50 years ago – now there are over 20 million. During a treacherous night dive with these aggressive creatures, the team tries to discover what has made them so successful.

The team also examines the health of the sperm whale population – which is an indication of the health of the sea. Tooni and Philippe swim with a group of the whales, witnessing rare behaviour of the social structure of these magnificent animals.

The planet's seas are changing fast and Oceans builds up a timely global picture of our planet's most magnificent and vital asset.

Oceans is also being shown on BBC HD – the BBC's High Definition channel available through Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media. With up to five times more detail than standard definition television, HD gives exceptionally vivid colours and crisp pictures, making Oceans a truly cinematic TV experience.

Horizon – How Mad Are You? Ep 1/2
Day and time to be confirmed BBC TWO www.bbc.co.uk/headroom

Around one in four people in the UK has been diagnosed with mental illness at some point in their lives. For many, simply being called "mentally ill" is a heavy burden, as it can bring profound social stigma, leaving some patients outcast all their lives. This two-part special for Horizon confronts this stigma and probes the fine line between mental illness and sanity. It asks: how mad are you?

The programme features 10 volunteers; half have psychiatric disorders, the other half don't – but who is who? Over five days, the group takes part in a life-changing experience as they are put through a series of challenges – from performing stand-up comedy to mucking out cows – to see who copes best with the tests put before them. The events are designed to explore the character traits of mental illness and ask whether the symptoms might be within all of us.

Watching the volunteers are three leading experts in mental health who accepted the challenge to work out who is who. This is something they have to do every day, but this process of observation turns out to be far harder than any of them expected.

The programmes explore some of the ideas behind a seminal Seventies experiment by Dr David Rosenhan – where sane patients faked symptoms to gain admission to psychiatric hospitals. It was an experiment which transformed how mental illness was diagnosed.

Horizon's own series of tasks, conducted by psychologist Professor Peter Kinderman, probes the line between "normal" and "mad". But will the individuals who have been affected by mental illness reveal themselves?

The programme explores the labels associated with psychiatric disorders and questions our perceptions and preconceptions of what mental illness is.

More information about this Horizon special can be found on the BBC Headroom website at bbc.co.uk/headroom. Launched in May 2008, Headroom aims to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health and de-stigmatise the mental illness problems which face up to one in four of the population, including anxiety, stress, depression and nervous breakdown. Horizon – How Mad Are You? is being supported by the BBC Headroom campaign.

sub-continent

Indian Food Made Easy is back for a second series and, once again, spice queen Anjum Anand has a multitude of delicious Indian recipes that can be cooked up with minimal fuss.

Anjum journeys around the UK revealing how the different regional flavours of the Indian subcontinent can be found throughout the country, from mouth-watering Bengali cuisine in London to the full flavours of the Punjab found in Glasgow.

Lynn from Liverpool features in the first episode. As a charity worker who cooks for her local hospital, Lynn is no stranger to the kitchen. She has set her sights on having a stall in Liverpool's biggest farmers' market – in a bid to raise money for the charity – and would love to cook Indian food. Anjum is on hand to help her with this culinary challenge.

Liverpool is home to a large community of Keralans and, to highlight the delights of this region's cuisine, Anjum introduces Lynn to two local Keralan women who are fantastic home cooks.

Lynn is impressed with the food they prepare for her, so Anjum puts together a menu of classic South Indian dishes to teach Lynn. There's delicious coconut chicken fry, sumptuous salmon fish wraps and vegetable and rice noodles cooked in a mild broth.

With 5,000 people passing through the gates of the farmers' market, Lynn is hoping her Indian delights will be a hit with the locals. And with Anjum's simple and speedy recipes, surely Lynn can't help but be a sure-fire success?

clone

To a massed audience of military and secret service hierarchy, in a bunker buried deep below a Tesco Metro, brilliant scientist Dr Victor Blenkinsop unveils the result of his life's work: the first human clone.

Intended to be a prototype super soldier, who will eventually replace Britain's volunteer Army, Victor discovers – to both his horror and distaste – that his new super weapon is not quite the awe-inspiring creation he expected. In fact, the clone is more likely to hug someone than shoot them.

BBC Three's fish-out-of-water comedy revolves around the education of an innocent being who is seeing and experiencing our world for the first time. This modern-day Dr Frankenstein and his monster go on the run hoping to find the neurological trigger that will fix the clone and unlock his superhuman abilities.

Unfortunately, they must also avoid Colonel Black and his crack team of security agents, whose mission is to find them and kill them.

Dr Victor Blenkinsop is played by Jonathan Pryce, the Clone by Stuart McLoughlin, Colonel Black by Mark Gatiss, bartender Rose by Fiona Glascott and Ian, Dr Blenkinsop's long-suffering assistant, by Oliver Maltman.

The arrival of a young druid boy forces Merlin to choose between the child's life and his own destiny, as the magical family drama continues.

When a druid and his young boy apprentice are caught in Camelot, the terrified pair make a desperate bid for freedom, with guards in hot pursuit. Throughout the chase, Merlin hears the boy's telepathic cries for help. Unsure what is happening, he is increasingly concerned and feels compelled to help the terrified child. Merlin ushers the child inside the nearest door, only to find Morgana and Gwen hiding there. To his surprise, when the guards knock on the door, Morgana covers for the boy and the guards pass.

Though the boy is saved, his druid master is caught and executed in the main square. Before the axe falls, Uther makes a strong speech, declaring that whoever is hiding the boy will be severely punished. The distraught boy refuses to speak, but continues to communicate telepathically with Merlin.

Merlin goes to the Great Dragon to ask him about the boy. The Dragon tells Merlin that the druids predicted the boy's arrival and that the boy is dangerous.

The next morning, the boy is unwell. Morgana begs Merlin to ask Gaius for help. Merlin is torn but, seeing how ill the child is, makes the decision to do as Morgana bids. Gaius reluctantly treats the boy.

Later that night, Morgana attempts to free the boy but they are both caught and the boy is sentenced to death. Merlin returns to the Dragon. He wants to know why the Dragon warned him against the young boy. The Dragon is angry that Merlin defied his earlier advice and tells him that this boy is Arthur's nemesis, Mordred.

Colin Morgan plays Merlin, Asa Butterfield plays Mordred, Katie McGrath plays Morgana, Angel Coulby plays Gwen, Anthony Head plays Uther, John Hurt voices The Great Dragon and Richard Wilson plays Gaius.

Festival Of Remembrance

Saturday 8 November
9.00-10.40pm BBC ONE
www.bbc.co.uk/remembrance

BBC One hosts coverage of the Royal British Legion's annual Festival of Remembrance in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen and members of the Royal Family.

The Massed Bands of the Household Division, the Band of HM Royal Marines, the Band of the Parachute Regiment, the RAF Squadronaires and The Queen's Colour Squadron of the Royal Air Force will be joined on the night by Katherine Jenkins, Russell Watson, Hayley Westenra and Jonathan Ansell. The lesson is read by the Earl of Wessex.

The event grew out of a national desire to find an appropriate way to remember the fallen of the Great War. In 1927, the British Legion organised the first Festival of Remembrance. It was broadcast across the world by the BBC, with songs, military bands and two minutes of silence. Every year, the Festival culminates in the poignant Service of Remembrance as thousands of poppy petals fall from the roof of the hall, each representing a life lost in war. This is a moment to remember all victims of war and conflict, paying tribute to the Armed Forces and the servicemen and women around the world, putting their lives at risk today.

Stephen Fry goes South West, as he continues his tour of all 50 States of the USA.

The high mesas of New Mexico are the starting-point for Stephen's journey through the dramatic landscapes and peoples of the South West. Here, the lives of physicists at the Los Alamos Lab, who are unravelling the mysteries of dark matter, contrast starkly with those of the eco-house dwellers living "off grid" near Sante Fe.

Staying with the Navajo Indians in Monument Valley in Arizona, Stephen learns to weave a basket, before heading to the sublime beauty of Lake Powell, and life aboard a luxurious houseboat.

He takes a Second World War Flying Fortress Bomber to the "Boneyard" in Tucson, where 3,000 military planes are eerily mothballed, before living out a fantasy by becoming a cowboy at the Old Tucson Studios.

In Nevada, Stephen meets semi-naked Mormon missionaries during their calendar shoot, and is initiated into the intricacies of brothel life by madam extraordinaire, Susan Austin, before heading over the Sierra Nevada mountains to the Pacific Ocean.

Adrian Chiles presents highlights from today's two Barclays Premier League matches. Chelsea were at Blackburn in search of their third League win in a row at Ewood Park. Both sides are under new management this season, with Luiz Felipe Scolari in charge of high-flying Chelsea, while Paul Ince has stepped up to the elite league with Rovers.

In the day's other game Fulham hosted Newcastle. The season is still in its first third but already the Magpies rollercoaster has been in overdrive. However, they have won on three of their last five visits to Fulham, so their loyal travelling support would have been hoping for something to cheer about in West London this afternoon.

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate took his side to Aston Villa, a club where he was once captain. Of the last seven league meetings between Manchester City and Tottenham, six have ended with a 2-1 score line, with Spurs winning five of those games. But it's been a troubled season so far for the London club, giving Mark Hughes's side strong hopes of taking all three points.

Walter Tull – Forgotten Hero

Sunday 9 November

Walter Tull was a pioneering black British footballer and the first black officer in the British Army. He died heroically fighting in the First World War, and yet almost no one has heard of him.

Former EastEnders star Nick Bailey has long been obsessed by the incredible story of this forgotten black British hero. In this programme, Nick investigates war records to establish whether there was a colour bar in the British Army and asks how Walter managed to become an officer, despite Army regulations requiring only men "of pure European descent". Nick also examines why Lieutenant Tull was denied a Military Cross for heroism, despite the fact that his commanding officer recommended him for one.

Both Walter's parents died before he was seven years old and he was sent to an orphanage in London's East End. Despite that, he won a place in the first team of one of Britain's most famous clubs, Tottenham Hotspur. But, in spite of great match reports for his first seven games, he received such racial abuse that he never played for the first team again. Far from giving up, Walter rebuilt his football career and then signed up at the first opportunity.

A fictional drama inspired by events in Walter's life, entitled Walter's War, follows this programme.

Walter was killed at the Second Battle of the Somme in 1918, at the age of 29.

In Walter's War, Walter is sent home to recuperate from a bout of trench fever, after showing considerable leadership qualities while serving on the Western Front. He learns he has been recommended for officer training at Gailes, Ayrshire, Scotland – a considerable promotion for any man serving his country, but of even greater importance for a black man at this time. However, whilst at Gailes, Walter must fight against prejudice as well as the demons which haunt his dreams, before he returns to the Front.

Walter's War is written by Kwame Kwei-Armah, awarding-winning writer of the play Elmina's Kitchen.

The cast also includes: Ewan Stewart as Sgt Fuller; Dugald Bruce-Lockhart as Captain Coombe; Samara MacLaren as Connie; and Michael Wildman as Edward Tull.

This programme is part of 1918-2008 – Ninety Years Of Remembrance, a special season of programmes on the BBC marking the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Muhammed Khordad, al-Qaeda's No. 3, is in London and wants to negotiate with MI5, as the critically acclaimed spy drama continues. Hoping this could be key to ending the war on terror, Ros and Harry agree to the meet.

Khordad reveals a planned terrorist attack by an extremist faction of al-Qaeda, targeting London at 3pm that afternoon. Khordad is prepared to exchange intelligence on the location of the bomb for a public pardoning of two al-Qaeda prisoners – he expects the Home Secretary to deliver a statement confirming they were wrongfully arrested.

Harry meets the Home Secretary, who is unhappy with Khordad's proposition, but, after considerable persuasion, the statement is delivered. However, Khordad reveals the broadcast was not to his liking, leaving the team to launch a desperate mission to find him and force the bomb location details out of him.

Meanwhile, the Russians have also learnt about the military operation and, in a test of Lucas's loyalty, they order him to make sure the bomb goes off. The team has a tough decision to make: either they defuse the bomb, blowing Lucas's cover and leaving them vulnerable to Russia, or they let the bomb go off – maintaining Lucas's double agent status.

In the midst of the drama, Harry receives a call from his old mentor, Bernard Qualtrough, who names the mole within MI5 responsible for passing on top secret information about operation Sugarhorse to the Russians. Harry is shattered when he realises one of his team members is a traitor – but who could it be?

Muhammed Khordad is played by Paul Bhattacharjee, Ros Myers by Hermione Norris, Harry Pearce by Peter Firth, the Home Secretary by Robert Glenister, Lucas North by Richard Armitage and Bernard Qualtrough by Richard Johnson.

BBC TWO Monday 10 November 2008
Murder In The Snow – This World
Monday 10 November
7.00-8.00pm BBC TWO (Schedule addition Thursday 30 October)

In September 2006, two groups of people crossed paths in the snow-capped Himalayas – one seeking freedom, the other adventure. A brutal shooting threw them together, changing their lives for ever.

In an incident that shocked the world, a 17-year-old nun, Kelsang Namtso, was killed when Chinese border police opened fire on a group of pilgrims as they fled Tibet over the famous Nangpa Pass – the gateway to Nepal and freedom. Kelsang, along with her best friend, Dolma Palki, was part of a group of young people who had embarked on a long journey to cross the border.

The shooting was witnessed by international mountain climbers who watched in horror from a nearby camp. As a cool-headed TV cameraman, Sergiu Matei, picked up his camera and started filming when the shooting began, others photographed the events and also helped rescue survivors. The story broke around the world when an American mountain guide, Luis Benitez, emailed his account of the incident to a popular climbing website – revealing for the first time the shooting of Tibetan refugees by Chinese border police.

Using the original climber footage, re-enactments and interviews with witnesses and survivors, Murder In The Snow – This World gives an account of what happened on the Pass and tells the story of thousands of young Tibetans who risk their lives each year to illegally cross the rugged Himalaya Mountains in an attempt to see their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, or attend school in India.

World War II – Behind Closed Doors:
Stalin, The Nazis And The West Ep 1/6

Monday 10 November
9.00-10.00pm BBC TWO

Joseph Stalin was a tyrant responsible for the death of millions – yet he was also a vital ally of Britain and America during the Second World War.

In a new series for BBC Two, Laurence Rees asks how it was possible for Churchill and Roosevelt to deal with this tyrant in order to help beat another, Adolf Hitler.

The series takes a fresh look at this vital period of history, drawing on extensive research in the Russian and Western archives and on the extraordinary testimony from witnesses of the time, including former Soviet secret policemen who have not spoken before on camera.

Programme one tells a history of secret allegiances with the Nazis that Stalin wanted to hide. Before he was allied with Churchill and Roosevelt, Stalin offered help to Hitler and the Nazis.

In 1939, less than two weeks before the outbreak of the Second World War, the foreign minister of Nazi Germany, Joachim von Ribbentrop, visited the Soviet Union to negotiate an agreement with Stalin.

The signing of a non-aggression pact between Germany and the Soviet Union surprised many – Soviet Communists and German Fascists alike. Though the two nations were careful to convey to the world that they had merely signed a pact, they were allies in all but name.

After waging war on Poland, Ribbentrop and Stalin would meet again and it was in this meeting that Stalin made a statement that remained a secret until it was discovered in the Nineties. He promised to support the Germans and not to allow their defeat, which went well beyond anything that the Soviet Union later admitted had been said at these meetings.

In a bid to keep his secret ally happy, Stalin allowed the Nazis a base in a remote part of the North of the Soviet Union and helped them with a clandestine Naval voyage to the Pacific.

Only in June 1941, when reality hit, and the Soviet Union was betrayed by the Nazis, did Stalin turn his attention to a new ally, Winston Churchill.

The porcine pair face a busy week at PPC TV this week as a legendary footballer, a wrestler and Perky's girlfriend – who has a very familiar face – all appear on the twins' TV show in this animated series.

Monday's episode finds everyone extremely excited when a leading football star is set to appear on their show. Perky tells a porky and announces to everyone that he is a sports star, too.

On Tuesday, Perky becomes obsessed with internet shopping and has been bidding like crazy. However, he gets a bit of a shock when he receives the bill.

On Wednesday, Pinky and Perky are desperately trying to come up with new ideas for their show, but they're not having much luck. Fortunately, it looks as though Wilberforce may have saved their bacon when he demonstrates his extensive general knowledge.

Thursday sees legendary wrestling star The Eternal Warrior and his arch rival, The Masked Tornado, booked on the show to wrestle it out one last time. However, The Masked Tornado is nowhere to be found and the Eternal Warrior is furious at the mere mention of his name.

On Friday, a jealous Perky – on seeing Pinky's fan mail – announces that he has a dedicated fan base and one of his biggest admirers is now his girlfriend. After some persuasion from his colleagues at PPC TV, Perky agrees to introduce them to Porchetta – his most adoring fan and new-found love. However, KT and Pinky get suspicious when they realise Perky and Porchetta can never be seen in the same place at the same time.

Martin Shaw stars as Father Jacob, a priest working to promote candidates for sainthood, in Apparitions, a new series for BBC One. Father Jacob becomes drawn in to exorcism as he discovers a dark battle between good and evil – a battle that threatens the future of the human race.

In his search for miracles, Father Jacob occasionally sees the hand of Satan and performs an exorcism. Although a reluctant exorcist, he has an undeniable talent for it and his mentor, Monsignor Vincenzo, wants him to take over when he retires as Chief Exorcist of Rome. Vincenzo reveals that Jacob's name has come up in exorcisms – the demons fear him. Jacob refuses Vincenzo, but when 10-year-old Donna turns up in his office begging for help, he cannot abandon her.

Donna is convinced her dad, Liam, is possessed. At first, Jacob thinks Liam's hatred of religion is just popular atheism but, as the evidence mounts and he fears for Donna's safety, Jacob has to find a way to persuade this militant atheist to consent to an exorcism.

While Donna takes up Jacob's attention, Satanic forces are in play in Jacob's seminary. Trainee priest Vimal is taunted by Michael, a homeless man who knows his secret thoughts. Vimal was miraculously cured of leprosy after he prayed to Mother Teresa – it's how he met Jacob. But now Michael tells him his new skin was Satan's miracle, not God's. Unless Vimal agrees to use Satan's gift, it'll be taken back. Michael warns Vimal if he tries to help Jacob in his exorcism of Donna's father, the demons will reveal his secret.

Martin Shaw is Father Jacob; Luigi Diberti is Monsignor Vincenzo; Romy Irving is Donna; Shaun Dooley is Liam; Elyes Gabel is Vimal; Rick Warden is Michael; Michelle Joseph is Sister Anne; John Shrapnel is Cardinal Bukovak and Sarah-Jayne Steed is Sarah.

BBC THREE Tuesday 11 November 2008
MONEY SEASON
The Last Millionaire
Ep 1/6
Tuesday 11 November
Time to be confirmed BBC THREE

Twelve of Britain's most successful young entrepreneurs compete to see who can create the most profitable businesses in six different cities across the world, in a new series for BBC Three.

Completely out of their comfort zones and stripped of all luxury, the wealthy young magnates are tested to see how successfully they can create a business from scratch in a different industry and a different country each week. Without their credit cards and contact books, how will they fare?

In the final week, there will be a showdown between the two least successful contestants – and no one wants to be the ultimate loser.

Week one sees the entrepreneurs in Istanbul, Turkey. In their chosen pairs, they are each given 150 Turkish Lira and left to their own devices to come up with a business inspired by "young people".

With a range of ideas including selling water to tourists; student and exclusive club nights; a belly-dancing show; and a digital marketing service for business, the sparks fly as the six couples push themselves to the limit physically, emotionally and creatively.

After a rollercoaster week, the entrepreneurs meet to reveal to each other how much money they have made. The duo that's made the most takes the combined earnings of all the partnerships and basks in the glory of winning. Then they return to their glamorous lives with their entrepreneurial reputations (and egos) in tact.

As the tension mounts and the winners are revealed, the remaining 10 prepare themselves for another week, and the possibility they could be the ultimate loser.

Next week the remaining entrepreneurs head to Berlin.

Other programmes in the BBC Three money season, which runs throughout November and December 2008, include: Filthy, Rich And Famous; How To Rob A Bank; and The Way To Riches.

Professor David Reynolds explores the bitter endgame of the "Great War"
Professor David Reynolds
explores the bitter endgame
of the "Great War"

This documentary film looks beyond the sombre clichés of Remembrance Day to uncover the unexpected, and often tragically absurd, story of what really happened between the German request for ceasefire in early October 1918 and the Armistice on 11 November.

Professor David Reynolds unravels a story of wounded egos, political scheming and brinkmanship behind the lines, as statesmen and generals haggled over the terms of peace, while, at the front, the soldiers fought on. In a journey that takes him through command centres and battlefields, he explores why half a million men were killed or wounded in the bitter endgame of the "Great War".

During these critical five weeks Germany fell apart in revolution, leaving it unable to resist the Allies' terms. Little wonder that, for many Germans, the new order was a betrayal of all they had fought for.

November 11 was not a peace, but a prelude to a century-long struggle for mastery of Europe. Reynolds argues that the frenetic politicking and the brutality of the fighting in the last five weeks sowed the seeds of the even bloodier Second World War just 20 years later.

Reynolds is the Professor of International History at Cambridge University and a Fellow of Christ's College. He is currently presenting America, Empire Of History, an epic BBC Radio 4 series on the history of the Unites States. Armistice follows Professor Reynolds's acclaimed series Summits, broadcast earlier this year on BBC Four.

This programme is part of 1918-2008 – Ninety Years Of Remembrance, a special season of programmes on the BBC marking the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Things hot up this week for the remaining seven participants, as the nationwide search to find a true leader among the country's young people continues. Today, the participants, aged between 11 and 14 and from across the UK, must learn how to make a good impression and about the importance of good etiquette and manners.

To start, the Test Of Skills is set in a posh restaurant where they must introduce themselves to their hosts and fellow guests, and eat oysters, lobsters and prawns correctly. Etiquette queen Liz Brewer (Ladette To Lady) is a tough task mistress and puts them through their paces, explaining that a politician's behaviour is always under scrutiny and that they must impress a wide variety of people in a range of situations.

Having mastered the basics, host Angellica Bell introduces the teams to their biggest challenge yet – they must host an ambassador's reception and impress adult guests from Ethiopia, Turkey, Japan and France by learning foreign phrases, behaving correctly and sampling difficult food with tact. Each team must nominate an ambassador who will meet the foreign dignitaries, a backroom briefer who sources and conveys information about the dignitaries and an assistant to run information between them.

Under pressure, who will remember their Ethiopian phrases or, when greeting the Turkish dignitary, that they must touch their forehead on their hand? And who will remember the correct way to eat frogs' legs and that Japanese eel is best eaten in small mouthfuls? Those who forget will face the wrath of judge Jonathan Dimbleby and hear his fearsome words: "Your campaign is over".

Toby's new pet-sitting service is under threat when his snake escapes, as the surreal children's comedy series continues. With Dani's phobia of snakes and Max desperate to fund a record deal for Ben, there's enough screaming in the house to wake an irritable and jet-lagged Aunt Sheila.

Children In Need 2008

Broadcasting live from Television Centre in London, the BBC Children In Need Appeal once again raises the curtain to entertain the nation, bringing viewers a rich offering of stellar entertainment acts – all appearing to raise money for disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. Host Terry Wogan is joined by Tess Daly and Fearne Cotton for a spectacular night of fun and fundraising.

The seven-hour show features some of the UK's top TV, musical and theatrical personalities and acts, highlights of which include performances from Take That, Girls Aloud, Leon Jackson, Boyzone, Escala, Stereophonics, John Barrowman, Il Divo and Jason Donovan.

A special edition of Strictly Come Dancing sees the presenters team up with professional dancers for a live dance-off – and there are some surprise judges, too.

There is a Children In Need-themed scene from Ashes To Ashes, a musical extravaganza from Albert Square, featuring the cast of EastEnders, and a special edition of Junior Masterchef.

Appeal messages feature throughout the night from a host of celebrities, including Stevie Wonder, Jack Black and The Osbournes. And, of course, there is the annual, live performance by the BBC newsreaders.

The programme also features broadcasts from around the UK, as BBC presenters join their local communities to catch up with some energetic and creative fundraising exploits.

This year, the fundraising theme is Do Something Different, and all those who step up to the challenge, or pick up the phone to pledge money for the BBC Children In Need Appeal, will be part of a huge community of supporters that make a massive difference to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in the UK. To get involved, viewers can check out the website at bbc.co.uk/pudsey.

Last year's BBC Children In Need television broadcast raised over £19m on the night, and the overall appeal eventually topped £37m.

BBC TWO Friday 14 November 2008
The Barristers Ep 1/4
Friday 14 November
9.00-10.00pm BBC TWO (Schedule addition Thursday 30 October)

The Bar is one of the most powerful professions in the country – it produces prime ministers, millionaires and the judges who shape our law. It's a glamorous world which attracts thousands of would-be barristers every year, but just one in five students will ever get to present a case in court – only the brightest and the very best survive.

Years in the making, The Barristers, a co-production between the BBC and The Open University, gives an honest and intimate insight into all aspects of court life – from the young people aspiring to join the profession, up to the most senior QCs and judges.

Episode one meets Catherine, Iqbal, Anna and Jo, who are among the students striving to join the Bar. As part of their training, Iqbal and Jo face each other in a Moot competition, presenting opposing arguments in front of hundreds of legal high-flyers in the imposing Middle Temple hall. Their training is intense, and they face mounting debts as well as fierce competition to get a pupillage; the next step to becoming a barrister. With interviews hard to secure, rejections mounting up and their results imminent, all of the students are feeling the pressure.

Richard, meanwhile, is a barrister working in Birmingham who is prosecuting a case in the Birmingham race riot trials. Despite the banter with the defence barrister in the robing rooms, it's down to business in court – but does Richard get the result he wants?

Unprecedented access was granted to the series' award-winning film crew from BBC Bristol, giving viewers a unique chance to see the real stories of court life.
