Angel (Eddie Redmayne) and
Tess (Gemma Arterton) spend
their last night together at
Stonehenge

Tess continues to work on the farm through a cruelly bitter winter, as David Nicholls's adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic novel of love and betrayal concludes. And Alec, who seems to have replaced any religious fervour he once had with a passion for Tess alone, continues to plague her with his relentless attention.

Tess's younger sister, Liza-Lu, arrives at the farm to report that their father is dying, and they both hurry home. Following his death and burial, the family are turned out of their house and travel to the village once owned by the blighted D'Urbervilles with all the possessions they can carry.

Tess later writes an angry letter to Angel, as she cannot forgive him now for ignoring her. Alec, meanwhile, follows the Durbeyfields. Unable to find lodgings, they have encamped in the local churchyard. Alec finds Tess and tells her that he has offered the family support and a home. She has no choice but to go with him.

Elsewhere, in Mr Clare's church, a ghostly, frail, young man appears. Angel Clare has returned home.

Angel's parents show him a letter from Izzy, begging him to save Tess before it is too late. Angel sets out to find her, and finally, he arrives at the house still owned by Alec D'Urberville – where Alec is allowing the Durbeyfields to work and stay. But there is no sign of Alec or Tess.

Liza-Lu tells Angel that Tess is in Sandbourne, a seaside town, and he finally tracks her down to a boarding house. Still staggeringly beautiful, she is a changed woman, wearing expensive clothes. When she says that Alec has won her back, Angel leaves in a daze.

A distraught Tess fatally stabs Alec and goes in search of Angel. She finds him at the station, where she confesses to what she has done.

Knowing that they will now be pursued, Tess and Angel escape across the countryside to Stonehenge. Tess has one last instruction for Angel – he must marry her sister, Liza-Lu. They spend the night together and, at dawn, the police arrive. Tess goes willingly, knowing she has experienced happiness.

As Tess faces execution, she recalls the May Dance and thinks of how different things could have been. From a distance, Angel and Liza-Lu watch the sinister black flag of execution flying over the prison.

Tess is played by Gemma Arterton, Alec D'Urberville by Hans Matheson, Liza-Lu by Jo Woodcock, John Durbeyfield by Ian Puleston-Davies, Angel Clare by Eddie Redmayne, Mr Clare by Kenneth Cranham and Izzy by Jodie Whittaker.

Charley Boorman –
Ireland To Sydney By Any Means
Ep 5/6
Sunday 5 October
8.00-9.00pm BBC TWO

Now in far-flung Vietnam, Charley Boorman joins thousands of local bikers on a Minsk motorcycle and makes his way over to Halong Bay to see the beauty of the Thousand Islands and meet traditional pearl makers, as he continues his most daring journey so far.

However, it's not long before this peaceful excursion takes a turn for the worse. Nerves are put to the test as the team, now onboard a very small speedboat on rough seas, are pounded by the water. A wave kills the small engine just as the boat swings in towards the rocks. The team's loud screaming alerts a nearby fishing boat who luckily manages to pull them out of danger just in time.

Charley gets back on track behind the wheel of a US military jeep to visit some of the most significant places from the Vietnam War – such as Vinh Moc and its infamous underground tunnel network, built by the villagers to escape the devastation.

In Laos and Cambodia, Charley experiences the wonders of the Mekong River on board a super powerful rocket boat. Enjoying the largest waterfalls in South East Asia, then dirt-biking his way around the countryside, he finally marvels at the 11th-century ruins of Angkor Wat.

Travelling south through Thailand and Malaysia, Charley tries out an unfamiliar form of transport to cross to Singapore – wakeboarding. Successfully making it across, and now on Nikoi Island, Charley boards a small cargo boat that looks well past its sell-by date. After some pre-departure prayers with the crew, it's not long before they're far out at sea and the second wave of boating bad luck strikes. The vessel springs a leak and begins to rapidly take on water...

James May's Big Ideas – Man Machine Ep 2/3
Sunday 5 October
9.00-10.00pm BBC TWO

James May has more big ideas
James May has more big ideas

As a child, James May dreamed of a world populated by humanoid robots who might tidy his room or do the washing up. James sets off to discover how close his vision of a robot world is to becoming a reality and, in doing so, enters an intriguing, mysterious and often rather strange world, as he continues his search around the globe for the latest, most promising but often bizarre technologies.

In Japan, James meets the closest thing to Robocop – a woman who can double her strength thanks to an extraordinary electro-mechanical jumpsuit. But what will this bizarre mix of human intelligence and machine brawn be used for?

He also has a close encounter of the weird kind with the most disturbing robot he has ever seen – a robot designed to look and behave exactly like its creator.

Continuing his travels, James heads to the US to explore the possibilities of bionic implants and talks to the doctor who is making them a reality. In doing so, he has created a real $2m bionic woman.

Finally, in the unlikeliest of laboratories, he encounters the world's most advanced walking robot – Asimo. This robot can tackle stairs and has even mastered running. However, when faced with a closed door, the robot proves it isn't all that smart. Cue Asimo's twin brother, who has learnt to recognise everyday objects. However, has James seen enough to restore his vision of a robot-filled future world?

James May's Big Ideas is a co-production between BBC Vision and Open University.

Match Of The Day 2
Sunday 5 October
10.00-11.10pm BBC TWO
www.bbc.co.uk/football

Adrian Chiles introduces action and reaction from the day's six Barclays Premier League games.

After a flurry of European matches during the week, it's back to domestic duty, with Champions League sides Chelsea and Liverpool up against ambitious Uefa Cup representatives Aston Villa and Manchester City respectively.

Villa took four points from Chelsea last season, and the sides shared an enthralling 4-4 draw in the corresponding fixture at Stamford Bridge. Gareth Barry's last-minute penalty earned Villa a deserved point on that occasion and the England man will need to be on top form to keep Chelsea's formidable midfield at bay.

Recent matches between Manchester City and Liverpool have been cagey, with no more than one goal scored in each of the last seven meetings. Both clubs have the attacking riches to end that record, in the shape of Brazilians Robinho and Jo for Manchester City and Fernando Torres and Robbie Keane for Liverpool.

Elsewhere, promoted Stoke and Hull visit Portsmouth and Tottenham respectively, while Everton host Newcastle and West Ham face Bolton. There's also a round-up of Saturday's games.

Shady Music is sued by Eminem, HearKittyKitty quit the label and Danny and Shay break up, as the comedy about the owners of a fledgling record label continues.
