Gaius (Richard Wilson) advises Merlin against using his magic powers
Gaius (Richard Wilson)
advises Merlin against
using his magic powers

Someone has poisoned Camelot's water supply and Gwen is Uther's prime suspect, as BBC One's adventure-packed family drama continues.

Deep in a subterranean cave, a beautiful witch, Nimueh (played by Michelle Ryan), moulds a clay model of a tiny creature that she brings to life with a drop of water. She places the strange being into an egg and sends it hurtling down the river that flows towards Camelot. The egg surfaces in the water of a darkened vault, which supplies all of Camelot's drinking water.

As a terrible sickness spreads through Camelot, Uther demands to know the cause. Gauis is forced to admit that it is a magical plague and Uther orders Arthur to find the culprit.

Merlin tells Gaius that if the plague is a magical illness he wants to try to cure it with magic. But Gaius turns on him – if he's caught practicing magic, he will be killed.

Gwen, meanwhile, discovers that her father has fallen ill with the disease. She goes to Gaius for help, but he can offer no hope of saving him. Gwen breaks down – if she can't find a cure he won't live through the night. Merlin overhears and can't help but be moved by Gwen's despair.

Merlin sets off into the street, evades a curfew and risks his life to go to Gwen's father. He disobeys Gaius's advice and secretly cures him with his magical power.

The following morning, Merlin's pleasure turns to shock as soldiers arrive and arrest Gwen for using magic. A guilt-ridden Merlin listens to her screams for help but doesn't know what to do. Uther, however, quickly deems that she must be the sorceress who caused the sickness, then used magic to cure her own father of it. He sentences her to death. Can Merlin help to save Gwen without exposing his own abilities?

Angel Coulby plays Gwen, Anthony Head plays Uther, Michelle Ryan plays Nimueh, Richard Wilson plays Gaius and Colin Morgan plays Merlin.

Casualty

8.50-9.40pm BBC ONE

It's Dixie's first day back at work and it seems to be a quiet day, as the medical drama continues. She says she is okay and is clearly trying to act normally, but Jeff isn't convinced. She is still quiet and withdrawn, yet is also taking risks in the ambulance – driving too fast and taking shortcuts.

As her day reaches a violent climax on the Farmead Estate, Dixie realises the truth she has been holding back. She tracks down Ben, the counsellor, at home, and starts to unravel events. The truth has been haunting her ever since the accident – her guilt has become an unbearable burden and she blames herself.

Zoe, meanwhile, has been given the news she feared – she is infertile. Having been in a foul mood all day, snapping at her patients, and clearly hung-over, she heads straight to a bar with Adam to get drunk. When Adam goes home early, things get progressively worse and Zoe ends up back at the hospital with alcohol poisoning, having fallen and hit her head on a toilet. Jessica covers for her in front of their colleagues, not allowing it to be known that Zoe, a doctor, has got herself into such a state. Instead, she tells them Zoe's drink had been spiked.

Elsewhere, Alice has been invited by Curtis to join him and Snezana on their paramedic shift. They are getting on well, and there's clearly a spark between them. When the shift ends in mayhem at the Farmead Estate, Alice is intrigued by Curtis and the way he successfully deals with the situation.

Dixie is played by Jane Hazlegrove, Jeff by Matt Bardock, Ben is played by Mark Letheren, Zoe by Sunetra Sarker, Adam by Tristan Gemmill, Jessica by Gillian Kearney, Alice by Sam Grey, Curtis by Abdul Salis and Snezana by Ivana Basic.

Match Of The Day
Saturday 4 October
10.30-11.30pm BBC ONE
www.bbc.co.uk/football

Viewers can catch highlights of today's four matches in the Barclays Premier League in tonight's edition of Match Of The Day. At Ewood Park, Blackburn Rovers boss Paul Ince tests his managerial mettle against Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson for the first time. Ince spent six years as a player under Ferguson before eventually falling out with the Scot. Few sides relish a trip to Ewood, but with the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney, Berbatov and Tevez at his disposal, Ferguson has a wealth of attacking options. Will the Govan-born boss get the better of Ince, the self-styled guv'nor?

Roy Keane, meanwhile, another Old Trafford favourite, always enjoyed a tussle with Arsenal during his playing days, and his Sunderland side will be fired up for Arsenal's visit to the Stadium of Light. The Gunners have won their last seven league games against the Black Cats, with their last defeat on Wearside over eight years ago.
