BBC FOUR Friday 3 October 2008
Classical Legends – Pinchas Zukerman:
Here To Make Music
Ep 2/8
Friday 3 October
7.30-8.30pm BBC FOUR

Six years in the making, this Emmy-nominated film by pioneering film-maker Christopher Nupen traces the development of one of the finest violin talents of the 20th century through the crucial years of transition from wunderkind to early maturity. It was one of the first of its kind, presenting audio material from the age of nine and filmed performances from the age of 19. The film also follows the growth of Zukerman's relationship with the English Chamber Orchestra which drew him into conducting for the first time, and caused quite a stir, as can be seen in the film.

The film includes music by JS Bach, H Wieniawsky, Mozart, Beethoven, Telemann, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Vivaldi. The artists include the English Chamber Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, Jacqueline du Pré, Itzhak Perlman and Daniel Barenboim, among others.

This is the second in a series of Christopher Nupen's pioneering and close-up films about classical legends, which continues every Friday. Other subjects include: Itzhak Perlman, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Evgeny Kissin, Nathan Milstein and Karim Said.

BBC PARLIAMENT Friday 3 October 2008
1964 General Election
Friday 3 October
10.00am-11.30pm BBC PARLIAMENT
www.bbc.co.uk/parliament

BBC Parliament offers viewers a chance to relive the historic 1964 General Election, when a slim Labour majority ended 13 years in power for the Conservatives.

The Conservative political ascendancy had continued with Harold Macmillan's triumph in 1959. But, as the economy took a downturn, bad by-election results followed. Labour and the Liberals benefited from a drop in Conservative support and Macmillan embarked on one of the biggest cabinet re-shuffles ever known – the so-called "night of the long knives".

The move cut little ice with the voters and the credibility of the government fell further in 1963 when John Profumo, the minister for war, was forced to resign after lying in Parliament about having had sexual relations with a reputed call-girl.

Dogged by illness and the aftermath of the scandal, a tired Macmillan stepped down in October 1963. Surprisingly, the Conservatives chose Sir Alec Douglas-Home – a 14th Earl – as its new leader. Few regarded him as the Conservatives' strongest figure, but it was felt he could command a consensus around his leadership. But the aristocrat's shortcomings as a national leader in Sixties Britain were ruthlessly exposed by the new and emphatically modern Labour leader, Harold Wilson, who had replaced Hugh Gaitskell after his untimely death in early 1963.

Feeling themselves to be on the run from a likely Labour victory, the Conservatives waited until the last moment before calling an election. As the campaign got under way in September, the polls were not giving any party a clear lead. Wilson himself was the focus of Labour's campaign, which seemed lacking when it moved away from promoting the leader. For the Conservatives, Douglas-Home attempted to stand on the Government's record and his expertise in foreign affairs.

Richard Dimbleby presented the 1964 General Election results programme on Thursday 15 October 1964, with analysis by Ian Trethowan, David Butler and Robert McKenzie and with interviews by Robin Day, Cliff Michelmore and their "man-about-town" David Frost.
