ONE Olympic coverage Friday 8 August 2008 |
 |
Rishi Persad is in Beijing and Clare Balding in Hong Kong to present live coverage as the XXIX Olympiad gets under way, with 16 days of world-class competition ahead.
There's much to anticipate with sports such as boxing, sailing and swimming starting later today. In a break with tradition, the medals in the pool will be decided in the mornings in Beijing, rather than the evening, so there will be no swimming until the heats on Saturday afternoon. The first finals will be decided this time tomorrow night.
From a British point of view, the early focus will be on the dressage section of the three-day event at Sha Tin racecourse in Hong Kong.
Events covered in this morning's programme include:
Equestrian
Despite the absence of world champion Zara Phillips, three-day eventing remains one of Britain's best hopes for medals. Team GB won three medals in this discipline in Athens, including gold for Leslie Law, in dramatic circumstances when Germany's Bettina Hoy was docked points for a rule infringement. Four years on, Britain's hopes rest on William Fox-Pitt, Mary King, Sharon Hunt, Daisy Dick and Tina Cook.
Coverage starts at 2am and commentators are Michael Tucker and Ian Stark.
Cycling
A field of 145 cyclists will assemble at the start of the men's road race to tackle a gruelling, hilly course over a distance of 239km (148.5 miles). The quest for Olympic gold starts near the Forbidden City and ends close to the Great Wall of China. Jonny Bellis, Roger Hammond, Steve Cummings and Ben Swift will all be in action for Great Britain, hoping to be the first Briton to claim an Olympic medal in the event since Max Sciandri won bronze in Atlanta 12 years ago.
Commentators are Hugh Porter and Gary Sutton.
Badminton
The opening round of the men's and women's singles gets under way with Tracey Hallam and Andrew Smith carrying Britain's hopes. Hallam reached the quarter-finals in Athens four years ago and Smith is also capable of a good showing, but both will be keen to avoid an early encounter with China's superstar couple Lin Dan and his girlfriend Xie Xingfang. The Chinese pair are also favourites for the men's and women's singles titles.
Commentators are David Mercer and Gill Clark.
Beach volleyball
Matt Chilton provides the commentary as the men's and women's preliminary matches get under way at the Chaoyang Park venue near the city centre.
Tonight's programme also sees the first gold medal of the Games decided in the women's 10m air rifle, which was won four years ago by China's Du Li. It was the first of 32 gold medals for China, which secured them second place in the final table behind the USA with 36 gold medals.

Adrian Chiles and Hazel Irvine present a full round-up of all the overnight action and stories and take a look ahead to the rest of the first day's competition. The programme also features analysis, features and interviews with the key figures making the headlines.
This is followed by live action including:
Rowing
John Inverdale and Sir Steve Redgrave are at Shunyi to introduce the start of competition, which has six British crews in action in the heats. The highlight at 10.30am is expected to be the British men's four, as they begin the defence of their Olympic title. Also in action are three other crews with medal prospects: Elise Laverick and Anna Bebington in the women's double sculls, Matt Wells and Steve Rowbotham in the men's double sculls and Alan Campbell in the men's single sculls.
Garry Herbert and Dan Topolski provide the commentary.
Boxing
The first of Britain's eight boxers are in action this morning, with the spotlight today falling on middleweight James Degale and light heavyweight Tony Jeffries.

Commentators are Nick Mullins and Nicola Fairbrother.
Sailing
The regatta gets under way at Qingdao with the focus on the finn class, where Ben Ainslie's quest for a third gold starts, and the yngling crew, now led by Sarah Ayton, who begin the defence of their title. Athens gold medallist in the class, Shirley Robertson, is there to watch from the commentary box alongside Richard Simmons.
Cycling
The conclusion of the men's road race through the streets of Beijing can also be seen in today's Olympic Breakfast. Commentators are Hugh Porter and Gary Sutton; reporters are Jill Douglas, Eleanor Oldroyd, Phil Jones, Matthew Pinsent and Garry Richardson.

Sue Barker introduces this morning's swimming finals live from Beijing, from 11.30am.
Today's events include:
- men's 400m individual medley heats
- women's 100m fly heats
- men's 400m free heats
- women's 400m individual medley heats
- men's 100 breaststroke heats
- women's 4 x 100m free heats
American swimming sensation Michael Phelps begins his quest for a record eight gold medals when he competes in the men's 400m individual medley heats. The 23-year-old, who won six gold and two bronze medals in Athens four years ago, is attempting to beat Mark Spitz's famous 1972 haul of seven gold medals.
Britain's Thomas Haffield also competes in the men's 400m individual medley, having set a new Commonwealth record at the Olympic trials in April.
Hannah Miley is another exciting British prospect to watch out for. The Scottish teenager broke the European record in the women's 400m individual medley earlier this year and should have little problem booking her place in tomorrow's final.
Andy Jameson, Adrian Moorhouse and Sharron Davies are on hand to provide the commentary.
Other events covered in today's programme are:
Equestrian
BBC One brings the latest news from Sha Tin racecourse in Hong Kong as the dressage phase of the three-day event continues. The British team won silver in Athens.
Clare Balding, Michael Tucker and Ian Stark provide the commentary.
Boxing
The spotlight is on middleweights James Degale of Britain and Darren Sutherland of Ireland plus British and Irish light heavyweights Tony Jeffries and Kenneth Egan, as the boxing competition begins.
Commentary comes from Jim Neilly and Richie Woodhall.
Judo
The medals are decided in the women's 48kg and men's 60kg categories, with Craig Fallon carrying British hopes.
Commentators are Nick Mullins and Nicola Fairbrother.
Gymnastics
It's 80 years since Great Britain last won an Olympic gymnastics medal but, in Louis Smith, there is a real chance. The 19-year-old won bronze on the pommel horse at last year's World Championships in Stuttgart and begins his Olympic campaign in today's qualifying event (3pm). British team-mate Daniel Keatings could also impress today, having won four golds at the Junior European Championships earlier this year. Commentary comes from Matt Baker, Christine Still and Mitch Fenner.
The programme also has all the latest news and action from the badminton and beach volleyball competitions. In women's basketball, defending champions USA start their title defence against the Czech Republic.

Rishi Persad is in Beijing and Clare Balding in Hong Kong to bring viewers all the overnight action from the 2008 Olympics.
This morning's events include:
Equestrian
The dressage phase of the three-day eventing reaches its conclusion, with live coverage at 2am. Great Britain led the team event after the dressage in Athens four years ago, thanks mainly to excellent displays from Pippa Funnell on Primmore's Pride and William Fox-Pitt on Tamarillo. Fox-Pitt's Olympics ended prematurely, however, when he was forced to withdraw after Tamarillo injured a hind leg in the cross-country. Four years on, the 39-year-old rider returns to the Olympic stage with Parkmore Ed, and will be hoping to help Britain go one medal better than the silver they won in Athens.
Commentators are Michael Tucker and Ian Stark.
Swimming
The first four medals are decided, with this morning's timetable as follows:
- 3.00am men's 400m individual medley final
- 3.10am women's 100m fly semi-finals
- 3.20am men's 400m free final
- 3.35am women's 400m individual medley final
- 3.55am men's 100m breast semi finals
- 4.15am women's 4 x 100m free final
The first gold medal in the pool should go to the remarkable American Michael Phelps, who is the strong favourite in the men's 400m individual medley. The defending champion and world record holder in this event, Phelps has his sights set on a record eight Olympic golds at these Games.
Britain's Thomas Haffield carries medal hopes of his own in the 400m individual medley, having posted one of the year's fastest times in winning the British championships in March.
Andy Jameson, Adrian Moorhouse and Sharron Davies provide the commentary.
Archery
The women's team event gets under way and Britain has high hopes of a medal. Eddie Butler commentates.
Gymnastics
Britain's women's team qualified for the Olympics by coming sixth at the World Championships in Stuttgart and will be looking to build on that strong performance in today's qualifying event. Former World Champion Beth Tweddle is, once again, Britain's best hope of a medal among the women, and is determined to make up for the tremendous disappointment of the 2004 Olympics, where she failed to make the final.
Matt Baker, Christine Still and Mitch Fenner provide the commentary.
The programme also has all the latest action from the badminton and beach volleyball competitions.

Rishi Persad in Beijing and Clare Balding in Hong Kong introduce continuing coverage of the Olympic Games with live action from the equestrian events, swimming, hockey and archery.
Equestrian
The overnight action is dominated by the cross-country phase of the individual and team eventing at Beas River, some 30 minutes north of Sha Tin racecourse in Hong Kong.
The cross-country is the most spectacular phase of the competition and Great Britain, despite being without world champion Zara Phillips, will be hoping for some eye-catching displays from a strong squad, which will expect to be challenging for the medal positions in both the individual and team events. Britain's main rivals will be the current team world champions Germany, who are also without one of their stars in Bettina Hoy, whose horse, Ringwood Cockatoo, suffered an injury in the build-up to the Olympics.
Commentators are Michael Tucker and Ian Stark.
Swimming
- 3.00am women's 100m back semi-finals
- 3.10am men's 200m free semi-finals

- 4.20am men's 4 x 100m free final
Britain's Rebecca Adlington posted a new Commonwealth record when winning the women's 400m freestyle at the national championships in July. But can she produce the goods on the biggest stage of them all?

Rebecca Adlington and Jo Jackson are the British swimmers to look out for as they begin their Olympic campaigns in the 400m freestyle heats. Adlington broke her own British and Commonwealth record in the national championships in July, posting one of the fastest times of the year. Jo Jackson was just behind her in a time that suggests she, too, should at least make the final.

Andy Jameson, Adrian Moorhouse and Sharron Davies are on hand to provide commentary.

Women's hockey
There is full live coverage of Britain's second preliminary match against Champions Trophy holders and world No. 2 ranked Argentina, from 1.25am.
Despite Argentina's ranking, Britain's women will go into the match with confidence, having beaten the South Americans 4-2 when they last met in Reading in May. The British managed to draw the two-match series and were by no means disgraced in losing three tight games in a five-match tour of Argentina last year. Having failed to qualify for Athens, British women's hockey is looking as healthy as it has for some time, but an Olympic match against Argentina will be a true gauge of how much progress has been made in recent years.
Commentators are Barry Davies and Sean Kerly.
Swimming
Today's schedule includes:
- 3.00am women's 200m free semi-finals
- 3.10am men's 200m free final

- 4.00am men's 200m fly semi-finals
- 4.20am women's 200m individual medley semi-finals
Not for the first time this week, Michael Phelps is the star attraction in the pool as he goes for another gold medal in the men's 200m free final. The American had to settle for bronze in this event four years ago but has since broken the world record and is hot favourite today.
For Britain, Liam Tancock will be hoping to follow up the gold medal he won in the 100m backstroke at this year's World Short Course Championships, while Kirsty Balfour carries British hopes in the women's 100m breaststroke.

There is also more action from the Water Cube. Kirsty Balfour and Liam Tancock feature in the individual action, while the British 200m freestyle relay squad look to secure a place in tomorrow's final.
Boxing
It's a case of little and large this afternoon with the focus on the light flyweights and super heavyweights on the last day of first-round action. For Britain's super heavyweight David Price, a win today would take him straight to the quarter-finals – one step away from a medal.
Commentary this afternoon comes from Jim Neilly and Richie Woodhall.

Britain has a very tough match this afternoon against the Netherlands – ranked third in the world. They also have a great recent Olympic pedigree, winning gold in Atlanta and Sydney and silver in Athens. Coverage begins at 2.30pm.

Gymnastics
From 4pm, viewers can catch up on highlights of the overnight action, which saw the women's team title decided.
Romania pipped the USA team to gold in Athens four years ago, but the Americans proved too strong at last year's world championships. The British team, meanwhile, reached the final of those championships but a first British Olympic gymnastics medal in 80 years may be beyond them.
The medals are decided in the men's 77kg weightlifting and the badminton competitions reach the quarter-final stage. Today also sees the start of the table-tennis team competitions – a great atmosphere is expected at the Peking University Gymnasium for what is one of China's national sports.

Michael Phelps had ambitions to win two golds in the Water Cube today, the women's team gymnastics were full of drama and excitement and the population of Beijing enjoyed cycling's women's and men's time trials through the streets of the city. Commentary is provided by Andy Jameson, Adrian Moorhouse and Sharron Davies.
Gymnastics
Today's gymnastic action, from 4.45am, features the men's all around competition. The USA won both the men's and women's titles in Athens with Paul Hamm and Carly Patterson taking the honours. As always, it will be a hard fought competition.
China's 2007 World Champion Yang Wei is many people's tip for gold. He fell off the high bar in Athens four years ago, ruining his chances of gold, but could find redemption here. The resilient Hamm, however, who has overcome a broken hand to compete here, stands in his way. Commentary comes from Matt Baker, Christine Still and Mitch Fenner.
