Sara Mohr-Pietsch introduces tonight's concert of Janáček's music
The music of Janáček is a relatively recent departure for Pierre Boulez, who last year conducted From The House Of The Dead at the prestigious Aix-en-Provence Festival to enormous acclaim.
Here, Boulez takes on two of the Czech composer's greatest non-theatrical works, Sinfonietta – with its extraordinary brassy sonorities – and the mighty Glagolitic Mass, performed here in Janáček's own more fiery and dramatic original version, as well as the rarely encountered Concertino for piano and orchestra.
Boulez conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, joined for the Glagolitic Mass by the London Symphony Chorus and organist Simon Preston. The soloists include Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (piano), Jeanne-Michčle Charbonnet (soprano), Anna Stéphany (mezzo soprano), Simon O'Neill (tenor) and Peter Fried (bass).
The concert is presented by BBC Radio 3's Sara Mohr-Pietsch, who is joined by Gillian Moore, composer Steve Martland and Pierre Boulez himself.
Digital viewers can press the Red button on their remote controls for programme notes during the performance.
