Standing

Handbag-wielding Cheshire divas performing Britney Spears and a group of gay men giving the Pussycat Dolls a new spin are among the choirs competing in a new entertainment show on BBC One.

Myleene Klass and Nick Knowles follow the choirs from auditions through the call-back stage to the live studio shows and on to the live grand final to see who has the passion, power and performance necessary to be declared the Last Choir Standing.

Tenor Russell Watson, Holby City actress and singer Sharon D Clarke and conductor, musician and teacher Suzi Digby make up the expert panel, who put the choirs through their paces, offering them advice on their performances.

The first show charts the journeys of 60 short-listed choirs as they begin their quest to be crowned Last Choir Standing. Coming from all over the UK, the choirs arrive in London to perform at Cadogan Hall. The judges must choose the ones they would like to see perform again, breaking the news to the unsuccessful choirs that they won't be going any further in the competition.

George Gently – The Burning Man Ep 1/2
Sunday 6 July

BBC ONE

Martin Shaw plays Inspector George Gently

George Gently

Martin Shaw reprises his role as Inspector George Gently, whose impassioned investigations reveal the dark underbelly of a society on the cusp of change. Set in Northumberland in 1964, George is joined once again by ambitious Detective Sergeant John Bacchus (played by Lee Ingleby).

In the opening episode, a badly burnt body is found near RAF Huxford and the only evidence at the scene of the crime is a ring with an engraving from someone called Wanda.

Local café owner Wanda Lane identifies the ring and confirms it was a gift from her to the victim, Rauri O'Connell. This marks her as a suspect, but Inspector George Gently and Detective Sergeant John Bacchus are concerned she is being framed.

When Special Branch officer Superintendent Empton joins the investigation, he tells Gently he is involved because he believes it may have been an IRA murder, though Gently is suspicious of him.

Later, local girl Carmel O'Shaugnessy reports her father missing and Gently discovers he had previously been seen arguing with Rauri. Events take a strange turn when they discover O'Shaughnessy's store room has been emptied of guns.

With the help of an informant, Gently discovers Rauri was, in fact, a high-profile IRA member – Rauri MacLeish – who was a marksman in the Border Campaign.

Gently and Bacchus go back to Wanda to find out how much she really knows about Rauri's real identity but discovers she has been taken hostage by Rauri's former IRA colleague, who appears to have something to hide. Can Gently bring a peaceful climax to this murderous situation?

Inspector George Gently is played by Martin Shaw, Detective Sergeant John Bacchus by Lee Ingleby, Wanda Lane by Pookie Quesnel, Rauri O'Connell by Finbar Lynch, Superintendent Empton by Robert Glenister and Carmel O'Shaugnessy by Charlotte Riley.

crimes

Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman and her team return for a fifth season of the acclaimed crime drama, starring Amanda Redman, James Bolam, Alun Armstrong and Dennis Waterman.

Jack Halford, Brian Lane and Gerry Standing have been brought out of early retirement to reinvestigate murders and cold cases that the Met has previously been unable to solve. They may have old-fashioned ideas about policing and a total disregard for rules and procedure, but their unorthodox methods can get results. It's down to Pullman to keep them on the right side of the law.

The team face their toughest professional and personal challenge yet as Ricky Hanson stands trial for the attempted murder of Jack Halford. In their desire to get justice for Halford and his late wife, Mary, the trio of veteran cops conspire to conceal the truth about events that led to Hanson's attempt on Jack's life. As Hanson's ruthless lawyer, Ian Figgis, aims to systematically discredit them one by one, it is left to Pullman to protect the reputation of the Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS).

A chance meeting with an old friend, court clerk Sam Tallis, forces Jack to focus his mind back on the job. Sam asks the team to reinvestigate the murder of wealthy businessman Ralph Wheeler, who left a £3m fortune to former prostitute Carrie Soper. Tallis had helped Carrie secure her inheritance when Wheeler's brother contested the will, but he now has reason to question her original claims.

Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman is played by Amanda Redman, Jack Halford by James Bolam, Brian Lane by Alun Armstrong and Gerry Standing by Dennis Waterman. Guest appearances in this episode include David Troughton as Ricky Hanson, James Fox as Ian Figgis, Hannah Waterman as Emily Driscoll, Ian Bartholomew as Sam Tallis and Camille Coduri as Carrie Soper.

of archaeologists who are
digging for truth

A team of archaeologists find themselves in mortal danger when they uncover a medieval mystery, in this new drama series starring Julie Graham, Hugh Bonneville, Adrian Lester and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

During an excavation of 14th-century medieval soldiers and Saracen coinage in Somerset, brilliant archaeologist Professor Gillian Magwilde, aided by forensic expert Dr Ben Ergha, eager new intern Viv Davis and the erudite but disreputable Professor Gregory Parton, discovers that the soldiers were members of the Knights Templar.

Analysis of a small piece of cedar wood from the dig indicates that it is 2,000 years old and originates from the Holy Land. Could it be part of the True Cross? An enigmatic symbol carved on the back of a crucifix could give the team the clue they need.

Magwilde, who has a passion for history and a hunger for the truth, needs time to survey the site, but right-wing religious extremist Edward Laygass acquires the land and declares it Holy Ground. Laygass believes Britain is at war for its Christian soul and calls on a cell of violent modern-day crusaders to aid him in his quest.

Julie Graham stars as Professor Gillian Magwilde, Hugh Bonneville as Professor Gregory Parton, Adrian Lester as Dr Ben Ergha, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Viv Davis and Michael Maloney as Professor Daniel Mastiff.

Paul Rhys guest stars as Laygass, Paul Nicholls as James, Oliver Jackson Cohen as Colm and Tamzin Merchant as Helena.

BBC TWO Unplaced Week 28
Lab Rats
Thursday 10 July
9.30-10.00pm
BBC TWO

Chris Addison plays Dr Alex Beenyman in Lab Rats
Chris Addison plays Dr Alex
Beenyman in Lab Rats

Lab Rats is a new BBC Two studio comedy, starring Chris Addison from The Thick of It.

Somewhere in St Dunstan's University sits the Arnolfini Research Laboratory – a lab for hire, meant for flashy projects which will bring the college kudos and money. Unfortunately, the Arnolfini is staffed by what are known in scientific circles as 'idiots'.

Lab Rats is a big, daft, cartoony sitcom, filmed before a studio audience. Although set in a laboratory, it is less about science and more an excuse for stupid jokes, endearingly chaotic characters and fast-paced, farcical plots. One week might find the lab rats unexpectedly creating giant, corridor-filling snails, the next week they could be wondering how they've offended Joan Armatrading.

The regular cast includes: Chris Addison as Dr Alex Beenyman, Geoff McGivern (Hyperdrive) as Professor John Mycroft, Jo Enright (Phoenix Nights) as Cara McIlvenny, Dan Tetsell (Extras) as Brian Lalumaca, Selina Cadell (Bremner, Bird & Fortune) as Dean Mieke Miedema and Helen Moon (Shameless) as Minty Clapper.

Lab Rats is written by Chris Addison and Carl Cooper, who won the Sony Gold Award for best radio comedy series in 2006 with The Ape That Got Lucky.
