Annabelle, Nanae, Lydia and Daisy prepare for life at Cheltenham Ladies' College
CHILDHOOD SEASON My New Best Friend
Wednesday 21 May on BBC FOUR
Programme copy
My New Best Friend explores one of the most significant turning points in a child's life – the transition from primary to secondary school. Each of the three films focuses on a different part of Britain and a contrasting type of school – a girls' boarding school in England, the Scottish high school that is the only option for children raised in the remote islands of north west Scotland, and an inner-city London comprehensive.
The first programme in the series meets four 11-year-old girls as they prepare to leave their prep school to attend Cheltenham Ladies' College. Programme Information has the low down on the girls as they prepare for one of the biggest days of their lives so far.
Annabelle
Before going to Cheltenham, Annabelle lives with her parents and older brother in Chelsea, London. Her mother, Sam, didn't go to a boarding school and so it's a new experience for both of them. Sam is simply keen for Annabelle to do what she wants to do – and Annabelle fell in love with Cheltenham when they visited. Annabelle moved to her current prep school when she was eight, so she already has some experience of making new friends at a new school.
Lydia
Lydia is the youngest of the four girls featured in the film, turning 11 just before starting at boarding school. She lives in Leicestershire with her parents and younger sister, Miranda. Lydia likes make-up because it makes her look pretty and different. And while she wouldn't mind being a teenager because she'd be able to sleep in more, she doesn't want spots. Her mother, Fiona, also attended Cheltenham Ladies' College.
Nanae
Nanae lives with her parents and older sister, Jess, in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside. She is the only one of the girls featured that will be a day girl – and not a boarder – at Cheltenham. As such, she will have to travel for an hour to and from school each day. Nanae has attended the same prep school since the age of five, and none of her classmates are going to Cheltenham with her.
Daisy
Daisy grew up in Soho, London. She lives with her mother, Tania – a successful artists' agent – and her younger brother, Stanley. When she's older, she'd like to be a singer. She wouldn't mind being a bit more outgoing, but otherwise wouldn't change much about herself. At prep school, she goes out of her way to be friends with lots of people rather than just one group. She learnt not to make really good friends after becoming upset when her two best friends moved away.
