Professor Robert Bartlett lays bare the brutal framework of the medieval class system in the final episode of the series, part of BBC Four's Medieval Season. Inequality was part of the natural order: the lives of serfs were little better than those of animals and the knights' code of chivalry was more one of caste solidarity than morality. The class a person was born into determined who they were.
This programme examines the violent knights, who were less chivalrous than their title suggests, the warrior lords and the lowly serfs. Holding such a violent society together was no easy task, and the social fabric of the time was about to change. The Black Death created such a shortage of labour that the serfs could demand wages and move where they pleased. At Blackheath and at the Tower of London, the programme tells the dramatic story of the Peasants' Revolt, when the despised third estate – those who worked – began to taste a new freedom.
Inside The Medieval Mind is a BBC/Open University co-production and is part of BBC Four's wide-ranging season exploring life in medieval Britain.
