Prom 9 – Mark Elder Conducts The Hallé

Interactive TVHigh Definition programme
Thursday 21 July
7.30-9.45pm BBC FOUR and BBC HD

The first of 16 Proms broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall on BBC Four this summer opens with music by Sibelius, including his Seventh Symphony.

The great Hungarian-born pianist András Schiff joins Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé for a performance of Bartók's lyrical Third Piano Concerto, written at the end of the composer's life while in exile in New York, and the concert ends with Janáček's show-stopping Sinfonietta, an exhilarating evocation of his home city of Brno.

The interval conversation with Mark Elder, András Schiff and members of the Hallé also features.

Red button viewers can also select Maestrocam – a continuous shot of the conductor with an expert commentary about the music as it is being played.

Suzy Klein and Zeb Soanes present this Prom.

BBC Proms 2011 are simulcast on the award-winning BBC HD channel – the BBC's High Definition channel available through Freesat 109, Freeview 54, Sky 169 and Virgin 187.
