The Great British Weather

New series Live event/outside broadcast
Wednesday 13 July
7.30-8.30pm BBC ONE

Macs, umbrellas and sunglasses at the ready! BBC One's new live show, The Great British Weather, an interactive live series set to tap in to the nation's obsession with weather, kicks off with a visit to the first location, Porthminster Beach in St Ives, Cornwall.

The resident presenters, Alexander Armstrong, Carol Kirkwood and Chris Hollins, start to unpeel the mysterious world of British weather with help from weather legend Bill Giles. They examine how the UK's latitude and status as an island surprisingly affects day-to-day weather.

Humans have attempted to predict the weather for thousands of years and it requires knowledge of how the atmosphere, the Earth's surface and the oceans work. There are always surprises in store when it comes down to British weather but the presenters examine how vital accurate weather predictions were in planning one of the most crucial operations of the Second World War – D-Day – and how forecasting has developed over the years.

As well as taking a microscopic view of Cornwall's unique weather, Chris gets up close and personal with the basking shark as he dives in head-first and follows an enticing trail of plankton, courtesy of the Gulf Stream. Why is the second biggest fish in the world attracted to this area? Chris gets his hands dirty as he finds out why sea has an effect on the weather.

With the help of viewers, Alexander and the team create the first-ever live interactive weather map right on the beach.

Seve – The Legend

Sunday 10 July
10.25-11.25pm BBC ONE

Known to his adoring public simply as "Seve", Severiano Ballesteros took the world of golf by storm and transcended the sport, with his magnetic personality and sublime skill. Presented by Gary Lineker, this heart-warming tribute celebrates Seve's life and features exclusive footage of the man himself.

Handsome, flamboyant and passionate, Seve strode the fairways for 30 years. He won the greatest honours in the game including three Open Championships and two Masters titles, often playing miraculous escape shots that held galleries in awe, from St Andrews to Augusta. He became a European talisman in the Ryder Cup, on the winning side four times as a player and, memorably, once as a captain on the Spanish course of Valderrama.

Earlier this year, at the age of just 54, Seve lost his battle with brain cancer. His foundation had already raised millions for cancer charities, ensuring his legacy will live on.

The programme features contributions from Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Jose Maria Olazabal, Sir Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, Greg Norman, Sir Bruce Forsyth, Des Lynam and Peter Alliss.

The Night Watch

HD
Tuesday 12 July
9.00-10.30pm BBC TWO and BBC HD
Helen (Claire Foy) and Kay (Anna Maxwell Martin) star in The Night Watch
Helen (Claire Foy) and Kay (Anna Maxwell Martin) star in The Night Watch

Paula Milne's ambitious adaptation of The Night Watch, written by Sarah Waters, is a poignant tale of liberation and loss, following the lives of four young Londoners throughout different stages of the Second World War.

The drama, starring Anna Maxwell Martin, Claire Foy, Harry Treadaway and Jodie Whittaker, opens in 1947 as the country is trying to rebuild itself after the war. Kay is mysteriously roaming the streets, haunted by some traumatic personal loss. Meanwhile, Helen and Viv run a marriage bureau, helping people rebuild their shattered lives by finding love. But their own complicated love lives are less easy to solve. Helen obsessively clings to her tumultuous and volatile relationship with Julia while Viv is continuing an affair with a married man whom she seems unable to break free from. Viv's vulnerable young brother, Duncan, harbours a terrible secret when a face from his past reappears which threatens his fragile existence.

Moving back in time through the Forties into the maelstrom of the Blitz, the lives, loves and losses of these four central characters are unravelled. For them, the post-war victory is bitter sweet, for it returns them to the margins of society from which they hoped they had been liberated. In order to build their future they must each make peace with their past.

Kay is played by Anna Maxwell Martin, Helen by Claire Foy, Viv by Jodie Whittaker, Duncan by Harry Treadaway, Julia by Anna Wilson-Jones, Reggie by Liam Garrigan, Nancy by Claudie Blakley and Mr Mundy by Kenneth Cranham.

The Night Watch reflects the major new investment for drama on BBC Two and is directed by Richard Laxton. This year marks the rebirth of drama on the channel with a range of truly original pieces that all signal this confident new direction.

The Night Watch is simulcast on the award-winning BBC HD channel – the BBC's High Definition channel available through Freesat 109, Freeview 54, Sky 169 and Virgin 187.

Small Teen, Bigger World

New series
Monday 11 July
9.00-10.00pm BBC THREE

Although she's only 3ft 11, 17-year-old Jazz has never let her size get in her way. From the age of 13, she has cared for her mum, who also has restrictive growth.

Following last year's remarkable BBC Three documentary Small Teen, Big World, this series sees Jazz embarking on a life-changing journey by leaving Colwyn Bay to study animal welfare at a residential college. How will she cope without her mum, who home-schooled her and is the only person who can make her laugh and who truly understands her?

When Jazz was born, mum Bev asked her dad to stay out of their lives. While she was growing up, he appeared in a BBC documentary about homelessness, begging and drug addiction. In the first episode, Jazz meets her estranged father for the first time.

Every significant moment of Jazz's life is captured on home video and this warm and intimate series documents Jazz's journey into adulthood.
