The Itch Of The Golden Nit

Saturday 2 July
9.00-9.30am BBC TWO

David Walliams, Miranda Hart, Catherine Tate and Rik Mayall are among the cream of British comedy leading the stellar cast in this surreal and spectacular animation, created by children for children, which forms part of the Cultural Olympiad.

Thousands of children across the country contributed drawings, sound effects and story ideas to the film, which was brought together by Tate and Aardman Animations with additional support from the BBC, either by uploading images to the website or by attending one of the touring movie workshops held across the country.

Eleven-year-old Beanie's bland life is changed for ever when he is sent on a mission. Armed only with laser lip-gloss and a pair of blend-in pants he has to save his parents from Evil Stella and return the Golden Nit to its rightful place at the heart of the sun, thereby saving the universe.

David Walliams is the Golden Nit, Miranda Hart is mum, Harry Enfield is dad, Catherine Tate is Evil Stella, Vic Reeves is Captain Iron Ears, Rik Mayall is the narrator and President Pinky, Sanjeev Bhaskar is Ten Heart Hero, Ralf Little is Fireboy and Bobby Fuller is Beanie. A host of other stars pop up in cameo roles including David Tennant, Pixie Lott, Matt Baker, Andy Akinwolere, Dick and Dom, Steve Backshall and Stacey Solomon.

Secrets Of The Pop Song – Ballad Ep 1/3

New
Saturday 2 July
9.45-10.45pm BBC TWO

BBC Two explores the process of songwriting in this new three-part series, which follows from pen to paper and then to the first public performance. Each episode sees songwriter, producer and musician Guy Chambers collaborating with an artist to write a new song, kicking off with the ballad and critically acclaimed songwriter Rufus Wainwright.

With universal themes of love and loss, the ballad is one of the biggest and most successful genres in pop. These are the songs that frequent weddings and funerals, and with a wealth of emotion are highly evocative.

Following the duo through the whole process, the programme also hears from a variety of celebrated musical contributors who divulge the secrets of the trade. Sting, Boy George, Neil Tennant and Don Black talk about their hit ballads; Diane Warren reveals some of her tricks; and music critic Will Hodgkinson delves into the archive to investigate old ballads.
