BBC TWO Friday 19 February 2010

Mastercrafts Ep 2/6

Friday 19 February
9.00-10.00pm BBC TWO (Schedule addition 29 January)

In the second of the series which celebrates the traditional crafts that built our nation, Monty Don meets three enthusiasts who are passionate about learning to thatch as a life-changing career change.

Monty, who seriously considered becoming a thatcher, charts the students' progress and explores the fascinating history of each craft. Roofer Colin Wombwell, aged 36, arts therapist Kate Edwards, aged 40, and painter and decorator Sam Hare, aged 37, begin their intensive apprenticeship, undeterred by the gruelling schedule.

Thatch used to cover half a million of the nation's roofs in 1900. But with only 30,000 thatched roofs now remaining, Oxfordshire-based master thatchers Matt Williams and Dave Bragg are now among just 1,000 thatchers left in the country.

But with 25 years experience between them, Matt and Dave are well equipped to take on the rookies and teach them all they know.

To the untrained eye, thatch is just straw spread out on a roof, but there is a reason why it takes apprentices four years to master the necessary skills. As the apprentices quickly find out, not only is it immensely tough physical labour; a fully waterproof thatched roof is also a highly complex and subtle thing to pull off.

While Monty unpacks the importance of thatch in the nation's history, the trainees are taught the fundamentals of the craft – from learning how to bend the hazel spars that keep thatch on the roof, to packing and blending the straw correctly to ensure the roof remains waterproof, before being put to the ultimate test – laying a piece of thatch on an 800-year-old property. But the question is whether it's good enough to stay there...

The Bubble Ep 1/6

New series
Friday 19 February
10.00-10.30pm BBC TWO (Schedule addition 4 February)

Hosted by David Mitchell, The Bubble is a comedy quiz which plays on the fact that some news stories are so hard to believe one would think they'd been made up for a joke. In this show, some of them have.

Three celebrity contestants are locked away in the media-free zone that is The Bubble for three days. When they're brought out into the studio, they're shown a series of news reports or images from TV, newspapers and celebrity gossip magazines. All they have to do is identify the true stories from the fakes. Because they've been away and out of touch – just like when you come back from holiday – they'll believe almost anything.

The contestants are a mixture of comedians, smart celebrities and wild-card bookings.

In this first episode, the trio of celebrities entering The Bubble are Frank Skinner, Reginald D Hunter and Victoria Coren.

9.00-10.00pm BBC FOUR

The concluding part of this groundbreaking series tells the story of The Latin Explosion and how Latin pop, born in Miami and created by Cuban immigrants fleeing Fidel Castro, has impacted on the worlds of music, business, fashion and media across the Americas and the globe.

Centre stage in inspiring a generation of Latin artistes to cross into the American mainstream was the country's most Latinised and bi-lingual city – Miami.

In the Eighties, music legends Gloria Estefan and husband Emilio moulded a crossover pop sound which exploded out of Miami into every city in the States. From TV shows such as Miami Vice and movies including Scarface to the corporate influences that embrace Shakira, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez, Latin pop reflects a new-found power and confidence for a community that has found its place in mainstream USA.

Producer Sergio George reveals the secret ingredients of modern Latin hits – tracks that now play across the US from giant Latino broadcasters such as Univision – while, Reggaeton, a sound that challenged the increasing blandness of much mainstream Latin pop, has evolved from the streets.

The programme features Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Shakira, Gloria Estefan and the stars of Reggaeton.

BBC PARLIAMENT Friday 19 February 2010

Election 74

Friday 19 February
9.00am-11.00pm BBC PARLIAMENT

BBC Parliament gives viewers a chance to relive the February 1974 General Election, the only post-war election to result in a hung parliament, with Harold Wilson becoming Prime Minister of a minority Government.

The run-up to the first election of 1974 was unusually stormy. Industrial relations between the Conservative Government and the unions turned sour as Prime Minister Edward Heath's attempts to calm the economy's troubles with Government-enforced pay freezes and calls for pay restraint failed. To make things worse, Heath's economic policy zigzagged and he also reversed the party policy on nationalising the "lame ducks" of British industry when Rolls Royce and shipbuilding were taken into the public fold.

But not all the Government's problems were of its own making. In 1973, war between the Arabs and the Israelis saw the price of oil rocket with predictable results for the UK's increasingly fragile economy. As demand for coal increased the miners sensed an advantage and pressed their wage demands further. As the Government's prestige rested on its ability to manage the economy and make its pay restraint policy work, little common ground between the two sides could be hammered out. By February 1974, 81 per cent of miners voted in favour of strike action and Heath's patience ran out.

Heath's decision to call a snap election in February 1974 to ask the country whether the Government or the miners should govern looked as if it could swing either way. Believing public sympathy would rest with the Government, he called an election three days after the miners announced their intentions. The campaign in February 1974 may have been the shortest in the post-war period but it was packed with drama. The fact that it was conducted under the energy-saving policy of the three-day working week made it unusual in itself, although controls were relaxed slightly to allow full TV coverage of the election campaign.

Alastair Burnett presents the BBC's Election 74 results programme, with analysis by David Butler and Robert McKenzie (aided by his trusty swingometer) and interviews by Robin Day with leading political figures and commentators.
