Dan Walker has all the week's football news

The Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League are all for the agenda for today's show, presented by Dan Walker.

It's FA Cup fifth round weekend and the famous competition has already thrown up some shock results this season. With some of the big guns already out – including Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal – plenty of the clubs still in the draw will be harbouring dreams of a trip to Wembley in May.

There is also time to reflect on the midweek action from the Premier League, which saw Arsenal aiming to do the double over Liverpool, and Manchester United travelling to Aston Villa, hoping to avenge their 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford earlier this season.

Looking ahead, the Champions League knockout stages begin next week – last year's runners-up, Manchester United, travel to AC Milan on Tuesday, where they will come up against a familiar face in David Beckham. The following evening, Arsenal visit FC Porto.

The Virtual Revolution – The Cost Of Free? Ep 3/4

Saturday 13 February
8.30-9.30pm BBC TWO

Dr Aleks Krotoski looks at how commerce has colonised the world-wide web as she continues her investigation into how the internet is transforming society.

Aleks reveals how web users are paying for what appear to be "free" sites and services in hidden ways. Joined by some of the most influential business leaders of the online world, including Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Eric Schmidt (Google), Chad Hurley (YouTube), Bill Gates, Martha Lane Fox and Reed Hastings (Netflix), she traces how businesses, with varying degrees of success, have attempted to make money on the web.

She tells the inside story of the gold-rush years of the dotcom bubble and reveals how retailers such as Amazon learned its lessons. She also charts how, out of the ashes, Google forged the business model that has come to dominate today's web, offering a plethora of highly attractive, ostensibly free services, including search, maps and video, that are, in fact, funded through a sophisticated and highly lucrative advertising system which trades on what users look for.

Aleks also explores how internet advertising is evolving further to become more targeted and relevant to individual consumers. Recommendation engines, pioneered by retailers such as Amazon, are also breaking down the barriers between commerce and consumer by marketing future purchases to customers based on their previous choices.

On the surface, the web appears to have brought about a revolution in convenience. But as companies start to build up vast databases of users' online habits and preferences, Aleks questions what this may mean for notions of privacy and personal space in the 21st century.

The Virtual Revolution is produced in partnership with the Open University.

Daniel (Ben Aldridge) begins a newspaper campaign

When Daniel learns that Old Peg Leg, a Crimean war veteran who has been visiting Lark Rise for years, has received no pension despite his war injuries, he starts a newspaper campaign protesting against this injustice, as the period drama based on Flora Thompson's novels continues.

Laura is delighted that Daniel has settled in Candleford and even her parents are pleased at the commitment he is showing. But when Daniel presents Laura with his grandmother's brooch as a token of his affection, she finds she is not ready for such declarations and refuses to accept it.

Thomas meanwhile, inspired by a self-help book, sets about trying to transform himself into a "thrusting" success, though Margaret, it turns out, likes him just the way he is.

Daniel's campaign on Peg Leg's behalf has attracted huge attention and a London newspaper has come to take a photo of the veteran for their front page. But just as Peg Leg's plight looks set to become a cause célèbre, Emma discovers a large sum of money hidden inside his wooden leg – he is not the destitute beggar they all thought, but a rich man.

Emma is devastated by his betrayal, and when Daniel learns of it, he feels he must expose Peg Leg, even if it ruins his reputation as a journalist. Dorcas though, points out that there is a greater cause at stake.

The dishonest veteran flees Candleford and hides in the woods but when Dorcas, Emma, Laura and Daniel finally track him down, he explains the painful reason behind his decision to hoard his money and never settle down. The trauma of lying injured on the battlefield has left him with a deep fear of staying in one place.

Meanwhile, Laura is still struggling to understand her reaction to Daniel's gift until Dorcas helps her see that she should just enjoy young love for now, until she is ready for more.

Ben Aldridge plays Daniel, Olivia Hallinan plays Laura, Mark Heap plays Thomas, Sandy McDade plays Margaret, Claudie Blakley plays Emma and Julia Sawalha plays Dorcas.

Seven Ages Of Britain – Age Of Power (1509-1609) Ep 3/7

Sunday 14 February
9.00-10.00pm BBC ONE

David Dimbleby continues to chart the history of Britain's greatest art and artefacts and tell the story of the nation through its treasures. The third episode of the series examines the Age Of Power.

The 100 years from the accession of Henry VIII to the first performance of Shakespeare's Henry VIII saw the creation of an enduring myth: England as God's chosen nation.

It was led from the top by the Tudors and the artists they brought to their court. First, Henry VIII, who, as patron of Torrigiano and Holbein, but also instigator of the Reformation, was a force of creativity and destruction; and then Elizabeth I, who inspired an art of devotion and in whose name explorers set off to discover the far corners of the Earth.

Items examined (and places visited) include: Drake's Drum (Buckland Abbey); Torrigiano's tomb for Henry VII (Westminster Abbey); painting of Field of Cloth of Gold (Hampton Court); Anthony Roll (Pepys Library, Cambridge); the wreck of the Mary Rose (Portsmouth Royal Dockyard); Tudor coat-of-arms (St Mary's, Norfolk); Henry's Great Bible (Lambeth Palace); Holbein's Ambassadors (National Gallery); copy of Holbein's Henry VIII (Trinity College, Cambridge); Henry VIII armour (Tower of London); Rainbow portrait of Elizabeth (Hatfield House); Hilliard miniatures (the V&A); John White's New World sketches; Molyneux Globes (Middle Temple); the Cheapside Hoard (Museum of London); Armada Portrait; and Shakespeare's History Plays (the Globe Theatre).

Generation Jihad Ep 2/3

Monday 15 February
9.00-10.00pm BBC TWO (Schedule addition 1 February)

Peter Taylor examines a network of young jihadists that stretched across three continents, as Generation Jihad continues. They were young, most had no direct contact with Al Qaeda and, in some cases, they had not even met each other face to face but they were plotting together with murderous intent.

Peter discovers how members of Generation Jihad were turned into terrorists through exposure to violent Al Qaeda propaganda distributed over the internet.

Aabid Khan lived in Bradford, West Yorkshire, but his influence spread right across the English-speaking world. This jihadi mastermind began his path to radicalisation aged just 12. He set up a social networking site, password-protected message forums and instant messaging to find, groom and recruit potential young jihadis.

Khan was in touch with young radicals in North America – one of whom was a 22-year-old college student from Atlanta, Georgia. Haris Ahmed dreamed of fighting violent jihad and wanted to train at a terrorist camp in Pakistan.

But Haris Ahmed soon moved beyond the virtual world; he went with a friend to Washington DC to record videos which they believed would curry favour with terrorists overseas.

Khan was also connected to a plot in Canada, where a 20-year-old college student had put in place plans to construct three enormous truck bombs. Zakaria Amara had also radicalised a young school friend and recruited him into his plot – it was to become the most complex and serious threat ever faced by Canada's security services.

Warthog and Lion's tale is told in this week's Tinga Tinga
Warthog and Lion's tale is told in this week's Tinga Tinga

Based on African folk tales and the Tinga Tinga art of Tanzania, this vibrant new series from the producer of the award-winning Charlie And Lola continues to bring to life some tall tales with big surprises, with voices from some of Britain's most illustrious stars.

On Monday young viewers can find out why Monkey swings from trees. There was a time when Monkey used to play on the ground and loved to wind up Crocodile. One day, the Big Rains came and Monkey became stranded up the Mango Tree. Nasty Crocodile promised to take him to dry land but only in exchange for one thing – his heart. Monkey tricked Crocodile and when Crocodile found out that Monkey swapped his heart for a mango, he chased Monkey up a tree. From that day on, Monkey swings in the trees, keeping well clear of angry snaps.

Tuesday's tall tale explains why Warthog Is So Ugly. There was a time when Warthog was really rather handsome – and boy, did he know it. He strutted around Tinga Tinga as if he owned the place. All the animals were fed up with Warthog's boasting and then, one day, Lion decided to give chase. Warthog ran head first into Porcupine's burrow and he was no longer the prettiest beast in Tinga Tinga.

Wednesday's adventure reveals why Rhino charges. There was a time when Rhino didn't charge and he couldn't see very well at all. Poor old Rhino really wanted to be invited to the Dance of the Horns up on the plains with Buffalo and all the other horned animals. But Rhino didn't have a horn, so he wasn't allowed. The Monkeys decide to help Rhino and make him a horn from a piece of old wood. But when Rhino woke up he didn't know what it was. "Aargh," he said. "Thing on the end of my nose! CHAAaarge!"

On Thursday, viewers can find out Why Jackal Howls at the moon. Jackal was a trickster and always wanted what was not rightfully his. Jackal took over Hen's nest and Aardvark's burrow and even took the cub's supper from Mama Cheetah! All the animals decided to teach Jackal a lesson and made him believe that the moon was made of the sweetest, most delicious honey in Tinga Tinga. Of course, Jackal instantly wanted some ... but it never came. From that day on Jackal has howled at the moon, waiting for another drop of delicious honey.

Friday's fable tells Why Frog Croaks. There was a time when Frog didn't croak. Frog sang like a bird ... and the birds didn't like it. Birds are the masters of song and that's the way it should be! So the birds trick poor old Frog into a singing duel – and sang and sang and sang ... until poor old Frog's voice was reduced to a "ribbit".

10.35-11.35pm BBC ONE
David, Alex and Samantha's story is told in Having A Baby To Save My Child
David, Alex and Samantha's story is told in Having A Baby To Save My Child

Forming part of BBC One's Being Mum Season, Having A Baby To Save My Child follows two couples over two years as they take a controversial route to find cures for their critically ill children.

Both Alison and Thomas, from Sheffield, and David and Samantha, from York, have a child who needs a bone marrow donor to cure their life-threatening disease, but have found no match through the usual route of the international register.

Now, with advances in IVF techniques, it is possible to have a new baby unaffected by the disease and who will be a perfect tissue match – and therefore a donor – for their ill sibling.

For Alison and Thomas, time is running out for four-year-old David, who has Fanconi anaemia – a degenerative disease of the bone marrow. As practising Catholics, the idea of using IVF techniques to "create" a child to cure another has created a moral dilemma. Alison says: "We're trying to choose a baby that's not only a baby for us but a baby that will help David. I guess ethically there are a lot of strong opinions about whether we should or shouldn't be having a go at doing this."

David and Samantha's daughter, Jessica, was diagnosed with the same disease at the age of 10 in 2007. By the time she was 11, she urgently needed a bone marrow transplant but, with no matched donor available, they were forced to use her dad's marrow, which was only a 50 per cent match. A few weeks after the transplant, Jessica died. Now the couple face losing their two-year-old son, Alex, who also has the disease.

The film follows them as they fight for NHS funding to pay for the treatment. David says: "We're not talking about 'I want a baby with blonde hair and blue eyes', that's not what we are talking about. We're talking about a child that is healthy."

Having A Baby To Save My Child is one of a series of documentaries that focuses on the issues that face parents today, being shown as part of BBC One's Being Mum Season.

How Earth Made Us – The Human Planet Ep 5/5

Tuesday 16 February
9.00-10.00pm BBC TWO

So far in this series Professor Iain Stewart has looked at how four natural geological forces have shaped human history. In this final programme Iain explores a completely new force; humans. No longer at the mercy of the planet, human beings have had a major impact on Earth.

Iain travels to Indonesia where he discovers the aftermath of a catastrophic mud volcano. A village close by now lies entombed in solid mud; all that is left is the roof of a mosque. This eruption was unique, as it was the result of a devastating geological accident caused not by the planet, but by mankind.

This eruption is a symbol of our geological muscle, but also a sign that human power over the planet often lacks control. But human impact on Earth goes back much further than one might think, and what's more, it has not always been negative, as Iain finds out when he visits the Rocky Mountains in Canada. Scientists say that 10,000 years ago the planet was set to begin a long, slow cooling which would have meant that today we should be on the verge of a new ice age. It didn't happen; this is the ice age that never was. This great escape was made possible by one thing: farming. This was the beginning of our role as a force of geology.

Iain explores how the human race has intervened in the soil and water cycles. It's an intervention that sometimes backfires but also a story that speaks of our great ingenuity in bending nature to our will. Today man has created an alternative human version of the planet's water cycle, where five times as much water is held in man-made reservoirs as flows in all the world's rivers.

Man's power to alter natural cycles can be traced back to one single resource: oil. Iain visits the Tar Sands – an oil-mining operation that demonstrates our dependency on this fuel. The by-product of this dependency has been a dramatic increase in levels of greenhouse gases. Today they're higher than at any time in the last 15 million years and it's causing Earth to warm.

Today we're no longer at the mercy of the planet – people have the potential to take conscious control, and ensure that our impact on Earth works to our own benefit.

EastEnders – The Greatest Cliffhangers Ep 3/3

Tuesday 16 February
8.00-9.00pm BBC THREE (Copy update 12 February)

Tying in with this week's 25-anniversary episode of EastEnders, there's another chance to see the series that reveals which Albert Square character has had the most cliffhangers in the show's celebrated history.

Counting down the top hundred, the three episodes list the number of cliffhangers the characters have enjoyed, signalled by the familiar "doof doofs" – that legendary drum roll that fans instantly recognise as the soundtrack to EastEnders.

Since the show exploded onto air in 1985, nearly 4,000 episodes have aired and all have been sourced, scrutinised and counted by a crack research team to compile this chart.

Contributors include past and present EastEnders stars Steve McFadden, June Brown, Adam Woodyatt, Bill Treacher, Pam St Clement and Lacey Turner.

Last Woman Standing Ep 2/6

Tuesday 16 February
9.00-10.00pm BBC THREE

Five female athletes from the UK have accepted the challenge of a lifetime – to travel across the globe to meet, live and compete with local tribeswomen in their own indigenous sports in an all-out bid to see who will remain as the Last Woman Standing.

In the second leg of the contest, athletes Alex, Anna, Joni, Lesley and Natalie take part in the most demanding relay race on the planet – the Xavantes log race.

The Xavantes women are some of the toughest women in the world, famous for this particularly arduous endurance event – a relay race like no other. The teams run for 4km in the Brazilian sun, and the baton is a back-breaking 50kg log balanced on the shoulder.

This is a true test of the athletes' strength and stamina and, as the days begin to take their toll, one athlete is suffering much more than the others, and Natalie is forced to pull out of training with an injury.

Finding it hard to keep up with the Xavante women, the remaining girls are forced to battle through their exhaustion and bruising, and fight for their place in the team with an 8km run in the blistering heat. But even without the logs, will they be able to finish the race and compete in the competition?

Over the course of their journey the athletes will be tested physically and emotionally, but only one of the competitors will have the honour of being crowned the Last Woman Standing.

Mastercrafts Ep 2/6

Friday 19 February
9.00-10.00pm BBC TWO (Schedule addition 29 January)

In the second of the series which celebrates the traditional crafts that built our nation, Monty Don meets three enthusiasts who are passionate about learning to thatch as a life-changing career change.

Monty, who seriously considered becoming a thatcher, charts the students' progress and explores the fascinating history of each craft. Roofer Colin Wombwell, aged 36, arts therapist Kate Edwards, aged 40, and painter and decorator Sam Hare, aged 37, begin their intensive apprenticeship, undeterred by the gruelling schedule.

Thatch used to cover half a million of the nation's roofs in 1900. But with only 30,000 thatched roofs now remaining, Oxfordshire-based master thatchers Matt Williams and Dave Bragg are now among just 1,000 thatchers left in the country.

But with 25 years experience between them, Matt and Dave are well equipped to take on the rookies and teach them all they know.

To the untrained eye, thatch is just straw spread out on a roof, but there is a reason why it takes apprentices four years to master the necessary skills. As the apprentices quickly find out, not only is it immensely tough physical labour; a fully waterproof thatched roof is also a highly complex and subtle thing to pull off.

While Monty unpacks the importance of thatch in the nation's history, the trainees are taught the fundamentals of the craft – from learning how to bend the hazel spars that keep thatch on the roof, to packing and blending the straw correctly to ensure the roof remains waterproof, before being put to the ultimate test – laying a piece of thatch on an 800-year-old property. But the question is whether it's good enough to stay there...

Jennifer Lopez (pictured with Marc Anthony) features in the concluding part of Latin Music USA
Jennifer Lopez (pictured with Marc Anthony) features in the concluding part of Latin Music USA

The concluding part of this groundbreaking series tells the story of The Latin Explosion and how Latin pop, born in Miami and created by Cuban immigrants fleeing Fidel Castro, has impacted on the worlds of music, business, fashion and media across the Americas and the globe.

Centre stage in inspiring a generation of Latin artistes to cross into the American mainstream was the country's most Latinised and bi-lingual city – Miami.

In the Eighties, music legends Gloria Estefan and husband Emilio moulded a crossover pop sound which exploded out of Miami into every city in the States. From TV shows such as Miami Vice and movies including Scarface to the corporate influences that embrace Shakira, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez, Latin pop reflects a new-found power and confidence for a community that has found its place in mainstream USA.

Producer Sergio George reveals the secret ingredients of modern Latin hits – tracks that now play across the US from giant Latino broadcasters such as Univision – while, Reggaeton, a sound that challenged the increasing blandness of much mainstream Latin pop, has evolved from the streets.

The programme features Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Shakira, Gloria Estefan and the stars of Reggaeton.

BBC PARLIAMENT Friday 19 February 2010

Election 74

Friday 19 February
9.00am-11.00pm BBC PARLIAMENT

BBC Parliament gives viewers a chance to relive the February 1974 General Election, the only post-war election to result in a hung parliament, with Harold Wilson becoming Prime Minister of a minority Government.

The run-up to the first election of 1974 was unusually stormy. Industrial relations between the Conservative Government and the unions turned sour as Prime Minister Edward Heath's attempts to calm the economy's troubles with Government-enforced pay freezes and calls for pay restraint failed. To make things worse, Heath's economic policy zigzagged and he also reversed the party policy on nationalising the "lame ducks" of British industry when Rolls Royce and shipbuilding were taken into the public fold.

But not all the Government's problems were of its own making. In 1973, war between the Arabs and the Israelis saw the price of oil rocket with predictable results for the UK's increasingly fragile economy. As demand for coal increased the miners sensed an advantage and pressed their wage demands further. As the Government's prestige rested on its ability to manage the economy and make its pay restraint policy work, little common ground between the two sides could be hammered out. By February 1974, 81 per cent of miners voted in favour of strike action and Heath's patience ran out.

Heath's decision to call a snap election in February 1974 to ask the country whether the Government or the miners should govern looked as if it could swing either way. Believing public sympathy would rest with the Government, he called an election three days after the miners announced their intentions. The campaign in February 1974 may have been the shortest in the post-war period but it was packed with drama. The fact that it was conducted under the energy-saving policy of the three-day working week made it unusual in itself, although controls were relaxed slightly to allow full TV coverage of the election campaign.

Alastair Burnett presents the BBC's Election 74 results programme, with analysis by David Butler and Robert McKenzie (aided by his trusty swingometer) and interviews by Robin Day with leading political figures and commentators.
