The Classroom Experiment Ep 2/2

Tuesday 28 September
7.00-8.00pm BBC TWO (Schedule addition 15 September)

Professor Dylan Wiliam attempts to wean the students off what he believes is a dangerous addiction to grades by trying out a system where they receive the teacher's comments instead, as the series in which education theory and practice meet head on in an experimental school classroom concludes. The class, though, are not a happy bunch when they get their work back minus a mark.

Professor Wiliam continues to test innovative ideas that he believes could help improve the quality of children's education. Using a technique called Secret Student, Wiliam tries to get the pupils to take more responsibility for their classroom behaviour. Each day a single student's behaviour is monitored by all their teachers – except the class doesn't know who the student is. If their behaviour is good enough the class is given points towards an end of term reward.

As the end of the term approaches, Wiliam is concerned that some higher ability students are not responding well to the innovations he's trying to implement. In the more democratic classroom he is trying to create, he senses that the higher ability kids, who are no longer the centre of attention, are finding the loss of the limelight difficult to adapt to. It's up to Wiliam to try to get the teachers to re-engage with these students.

But the ultimate test is whether the class has done better than the rest of Year 8 at the end of this term-long classroom experiment. When Wiliam analyses the results, even he's surprised at the outcome.

This two-part series is part of BBC Two's School Season – a range of programming, on air throughout September, encompassing documentary, drama, debate and information at

Episode 1 of The Classroom Experiment can be seen on Monday 27 September.

Alan Davies stars as "executive chef" Roland White
Alan Davies stars as "executive chef" Roland White

Set in the kitchen of a country house hotel, Whites follows the trials and tribulations of head chef Roland White (Alan Davies) and his long suffering sous chef Bib (Darren Boyd).

Having been on the brink of success 15 years ago, Roland has since lost the sparkle and drive needed to win a long-coveted Michelin star. He can cook with the best of them when he puts his mind to it, but laziness gets the better of him, much to the annoyance of restaurant manager Caroline (Katherine Parkinson).

Bib, meanwhile, is under pressure and hasn't spent time with his wife for months. It doesn't help that Skoose (Stephen Wight) the apprentice chef, has zero respect for him or that quirky waitress Kiki (Isy Suttie), takes an order for an eggless omelette.

Despite all their problems, Bib knows he is lucky to be working alongside a true culinary genius and Roland knows that Bib is a true friend. But this doesn't stop things from getting heated in the kitchen.
