John Inverdale looks back at all the day's action from Wimbledon

Sue Barker is at Wimbledon as the 2010 Championships continue.

Reigning women's singles champion Serena Williams will begin the defence of her title this afternoon. There has only been one final in the past 10 years that has not featured at least one of the Williams sisters so she and Venus will be among the favourites again this year.

For many of the 256 competitors in the men's and women's singles draw, this tournament will be the highlight of the year with the chance to play on the hallowed lawns of the All England Club. There is also the added bonus of record prize money, with the singles champions earning £1m and first-round losers getting a cheque for £11,250.

At 8pm on BBC Two in Today At Wimbledon, John Inverdale looks back at the day's action from the All England Club. John also gives viewers a chance to catch up on all the action from the opening day of the 2010 Championships in Yesterday At Wimbledon at 10.30am on BBC Two.

Wimbledon 2010 is simulcast on the BBC HD channel – the BBC's High Definition channel, available through Freesat 108, Freeview 50, Sky 143 and Virgin 108.

Imagine – Art Is Child's Play Ep 2/4

Tuesday 22 June
10.35-11.25pm BBC ONE (Schedule addition 4 June)

Alan Yentob meets some of Britain's best-known artists as they explore the connection between childhood play and adult art, as the new series of Imagine continues.

At a recent exhibition at the Haunch of Venison Gallery in London, works of art created by London schoolchildren were exhibited alongside some of the biggest names in British art.

The childrens charity Kids Company invited both artists and school kids to recreate a room from their childhood homes inside a shoebox. Through this creative process, both children and artists revealed fascinating and often poignant aspects of their childhood experience.

Alan discovers the significance of our early creative experiences and discovers how much artists draw on their own childhood in the realisation of their work.

In the course of his enquiry into the power of play and the importance of the formative experiences of childhood on creativity, Alan encounters some of Britain's leading contemporary artists, including Tracey Emin, Grayson Perry, Marc Quinn, Gavin Turk, Mat Collishaw, Polly Morgan and David Bailey.

Destiny, Nelson, Kali, Marion and Vince are the stars of BBC Three's new multi-species puppet comedy

Mongrels is a bold and surprising new adult multi-species puppet comedy for BBC Three, featuring the voices of Rufus Jones, Lucy Montgomery, Katy Brand, Dan Tetsell and Paul Kaye.

Set in the back yard of an inner-city pub, Mongrels follows the day-to-day lives, trials and tribulations of Nelson, a metrosexual fox; Destiny, a pretentious pedigree "it-bitch"; Kali, a deeply cynical pigeon; Marion, an abandoned tom cat; and Vince, a streetwise geezer fox.

In the first episode, Nelson discovers the harsh reality of interspecies dating after falling in love with a chicken. Marion gets himself adopted after his previous owner dies – but ends up getting neutered in the process.

Contemptuous pigeon Kali implicates DJ Toby Anstis in one of her evil schemes, and pedigree bitch Destiny bites her owner so she can attend dog obedience classes and get closer to Rivers, the rule-breaking rebel dog she met outside the adult education centre.

The voiceover cast includes Rufus Jones as Nelson, Lucy Montgomery as Destiny, Katy Brand as Kali, Dan Tetsell as Marion and Paul Kaye as Vince, and this episode features special guest star Toby Anstis.

2010 FIFA WORLD CUP
Match Of The Day – France v South Africa

Tuesday 22 June
12.55-2.40am BBC THREE

Football fans have a chance to see 1998 World Cup champions France take on hosts South Africa, in a game played earlier today.

Despite a side packed with attacking talents, including Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka and Franck Ribery, France have often struggled to gel under coach Raymond Domenech. Les Bleus won the World Cup on home soil and will not underestimate the value of a partisan local support when they take on South Africa in Bloemfontein.

Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira led Brazil to glory at the 1994 World Cup but failed to progress beyond the group stage with Kuwait, UAE and Saudi Arabia.

FATHERHOOD SEASON
The Biology Of Dads

Tuesday 22 June
9.00-10.00pm BBC FOUR

"Every child needs a father" is a phrase heard often enough, but is there actually any evidence to support it? In this enlightening documentary, child psychologist Laverne Antrobus goes on a quest to discover just why a dad's relationship with his offspring is so important. She uncovers fascinating new research which is shedding light onto the science of fatherhood.

Laverne meets a new dad who has been experiencing Couvade Syndrome, a condition sometimes known as "sympathetic pregnancy". She is keen to explore whether the symptoms – which are similar to those felt by pregnant women, such as nausea – might be physiological as well as psychological, so the father takes a blood test shortly after the birth of his third child. Laverne discovers that his hormones could be the cause of his symptoms and so could be nature's way of "priming" him to become a more nurturing father.

Laverne then meets one of the UK's leading experts in the father's role within the family. While observing father and toddler play in his lab, she finds out how the rough-and-tumble play they are witnessing is classic "dad" behaviour. It is believed that this kind of fatherly play is essential in teaching toddlers the boundaries of aggression and discipline.

Additionally, the regular-talking style which is used more commonly by dads with their children – as opposed to more simplistic baby talk – appears to aid a child's language development. And fathers tend to use more complex language, such as wit and sarcasm, which also further enhances a toddler's own word skills.

Laverne also looks into recent research which claims that men who have a good relationship with their daughters can actually influence the kind of man she marries. The study has also found that girls whose fathers were absent during their formative years tended to reach puberty sooner and age quicker. And Laverne recruits a team of married women to take part in one final, fascinating experiment.

This programme airs in BBC Four's Fatherhood Season, a range of programmes which explore the role of fathers from an historical, scientific and literary perspective. The season also features Lennon Naked, a drama starring Christopher Eccleston, which explores John Lennon's role as a father and the impact of the brief and unhappy reappearance of his own absent father into his life.
