Gary Barlow and Take That are adding to the magic by inviting an all-star line-up of rock and pop's finest who, in total, have amassed more than 50 UK No. 1 hits, to take part in Children In Need Rocks The Royal Albert Hall.

The star-studded bill includes: Sir Paul McCartney; Lily Allen; Dizzee Rascal; Dame Shirley Bassey; Leona Lewis; Paolo Nutini; Mika; Snow Patrol; Cheryl Cole; Katherine Jenkins; and Muse. And, of course, Gary also performs on the night with his Take That partners, Jason Orange, Howard Donald and Mark Owen, as they again show their unwavering support of the charity.

There are also some very special surprises on the night.

"It's fantastic to be able to kick off BBC Children In Need 2009 in such a special way," says Gary. "I've always wanted to do something like this and I can promise a night to remember – a night that will, I hope, play a small part in changing the lives of disadvantaged children across the UK."

7.00-8.00pm BBC TWO (Schedule addition 29 October)

Tonight's Culture Show, presented by Mark Kermode, comes from the Aardman studios in Bristol and celebrates the 20th anniversary of Wallace and Gromit's first outing. The lovable duo were first introduced to the British public in the short film A Grand Day Out in 1989. Later escapades, including The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and The Curse Of The Were Rabbit, hit gold, won Oscars and have attracted record-breaking TV audiences. A Matter Of Loaf And Death was the most watched programme on British television last year, gaining a 16½ million viewers.

In tonight's programme, a mix of high-profile fans, including Sir Terry Wogan, Jonathan Ross and Ian Hislop, speak of how and why they fell in love with this one man and his dog. Lauren Laverne traces the Aardman story, from their origins as the creators of Morph, in the Seventies, to their collaboration with Dreamworks. Nick Park talks to Mark Kermode about his creative inspirations from The Beano comic to the films of Alfred Hitchcock, revealing some surprising parallels along the way.

Also in tonight’s programme, actor, comedian and film star Steve Martin talks to Lauren about his love of banjo, bluegrass music and his band’s first-ever UK gig, at the Royal Festival Hall. The Restaurant Ep 4/6

8.00-9.00pm BBC TWO
Raymond Blanc challenges the couple to make dishes to sell at a local farmers market
Raymond Blanc challenges the couple to make dishes to sell at a local farmers market

The five remaining couples get a lesson in seasonality as The Restaurant continues.

Before their restaurants open for evening service, Raymond Blanc sets them a challenge. They must use only fresh, local and seasonal produce to make dishes to sell at a farmers' market. As well as showcasing the best produce, their dishes must promote their restaurant concepts.

It's a chance to find new customers and show Raymond's partners, Sarah Willingham and David Moore, what they can do but, as the pressure mounts, one pair goes absent without leave.

Back at the restaurants, a surprise delivery from Raymond puts seasonal meat on all the couples' menus. For some chefs it's a welcome chance to move beyond their comfort zone, but others find it barbaric.

It's clear that while some of the couples are beginning to shine, the bravado of others is wearing thin. Whatever Raymond, Sarah and David see will decide which of the couples' restaurants will close.

Wonderland – Can We Get Married? Ep 5/8

Thursday 19 November
9.50-10.30pm BBC TWO

Like many couples in their late twenties who have been together for six years, Emma Bishop and Ben Marshall are thinking of getting married. But for them, the decision is not entirely straightforward – they both have Down's syndrome.

Observational documentary series Wonderland continues seeking out people and places that offer a glimpse of today's Britain usually hidden from view. Emma and Ben are residents of a supported-living community in Devon, where they have an active social life and part-time jobs. They live in a small house with their friend, Cy Clench, who also has Down's syndrome. If they are to marry, it could mean a completely different way of living.

Through the high spirits of their dance nights to the tired conversations at the end of their working days, this film follows Emma and Ben as they try to work out whether married life is going to be the romantic dream they had always imagined or an enormous stress they could well do without.

A History Of Christianity –
Orthodoxy: From Empire To Empire Ep 3/6

Thursday 19 November
9.00-10.00pm BBC FOUR

Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch tells an epic story of endurance and survival, as A History Of Christianity continues with an exploration into the troubled history of the Orthodox Church.

Beginning at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in London, where he is a guest at a congregation rich in ancient symbolism, Professor MacCulloch considers the story this passionate drama is trying to tell.

Tracing the origins of the Orthodox Church back to Constantinople, an unlikely husband and wife established an empire that widened the divide between East and West. Professor MacCulloch travels to Egypt to understand why ancient icons are so important to Orthodoxy, and how they survived the iconoclastic crisis.

In the early Middle Ages, Orthodoxy was under siege, first by Catholic Crusaders in a shameful act of Christian betrayal, and later by Islam. Professor MacCulloch visits the Czech Republic to show how two ingenious saints ensured the survival of Orthodoxy in Eastern Europe.

In the harsh environs of Russia, Orthodoxy found surprisingly fertile ground as a "people's religion", surviving repeated attempts to subdue it by tyrants like Ivan The Terrible and Peter The Great.

When the Bolsheviks tried to purge Christianity from Russia and replace it with atheism, the Orthodox Church faced extinction, but Professor MacCulloch reveals how Orthodoxy survived and why Stalin was forced to bring the Church back into the fold.

A History Of Christianity is a co-production with The Open University. Further information on the OU can be found at open2.net.
