MotoGP – 2009 Season Review

Saturday 14 November
1.10-2.00pm BBC ONE

There's a chance for viewers to look back at the 2009 MotoGP season, which had no shortage of excitement and talking points.

Among the highlights was the thrilling duel between eventual world champion Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, at the Catalunya Grand Prix. Rossi just pipped his young rival after an unbelievable last lap in which the lead changed hands three times. The Italian went on to clinch his seventh world premier class title in the penultimate race of the season, in Malaysia, and passed another milestone at Assen in June with his 100th career victory.

Spaniard Lorenzo, meanwhile, just missed out on the title this season but looks sure to capture it at some point in the future after impressing hugely in only his second year in the sport's top class. Also in his second MotoGP campaign was Britain's James Toseland, although it was not a happy season for the Yamaha Tech 3 rider, whose contract was not renewed for 2010.

Former world champion Casey Stoner also endured his share of ups and downs, notably suffering a debilitating virus, which caused the Australian to miss three races – although he came back to finish the season in great form.

Berlin

Saturday 14 November
7.30-8.30pm BBC TWO (Schedule addition 2 November)

Picture Description
Picture Caption

Matt Frei was a BBC reporter in Berlin when the Wall came down in 1989 and this three-part documentary series begins with his recollection of that moment, reflecting on how ideas have shaped, divided and formed Berlin – both physically and ideologically – throughout its turbulent history.

This city of ideas began with King Friedrich the Great. Pushed into a loveless marriage, Friedrich became a great patron of the arts, creating an empire of ideas. Friedrich's palace was a magnet for artists, philosophers and musicians, including Handel, Bach and French philosopher Voltaire.

Some 150 years later, there was no king any more. Karl Marx and the Communist Manifesto ushered in a wave of revolution against a backdrop of poverty – and the Kaiser was forced to abdicate in 1918.

Exploring Twenties Berlin, Matt finds civil unrest and bloodshed alongside liberalism and a thriving social scene of cabaret, art and music. Contrasting this with a current-day political rally, Matt finds that "Berlin is half street-fight and half carnival. Everyone is up for a party but soon enough the party turns into a fight."

War broke out on the streets and, as the economy collapsed, Hitler's popularity soared. Berlin's Avant Garde fled the country which had previously encouraged the expression of ideas, yet this programme discovers that in Hitler's bunker hung a portrait of Friedrich the Great. The 18th-century King had been Hitler's inspiration.

Finally the programme returns to the building of and eventual fall of the Berlin Wall, with the city becoming the capital of a re-united Germany – and Berliners eventually reconciling the split in ideas that has caused so much controversy in the history of this unique place.

Berlin is co-produced by The Open University. A free bi-lingual guide to the city is available to accompany the series, which viewers can obtain by calling 0845 366 8013 or visiting open2.net.

MODERN BEAUTY SEASON
What Is Beauty?

Saturday 14 November
8.30-9.30pm BBC TWO (Schedule addition 2 November)

Art critic and broadcaster Matt Collings takes viewers on a sumptuous tour of beauty in art
Art critic and broadcaster Matt Collings takes viewers on a sumptuous tour of beauty in art

Looking at a beautiful piece of art can excite, provoke, soothe and inspire but what is it that makes art truly beautiful? What Is Beauty? is the first film in the Modern Beauty Season and takes viewers on a sumptuous tour of art critic and broadcaster Matt Collings's Top 10 favourite experiences of beauty in art. Each piece illustrates one of the 10 key principles which he believes explains the rush of pleasure people get from looking at beautiful art.

Matt's list of favourite art experiences range across history. He looks at everything from the pre-historic art of cavemen to the high-tech super-modern Norman Foster-designed bridge in the South of France. His list contains some of the indisputable masterpieces of the Renaissance and also the much more debatable pleasures of contemporary art. It is a personal Top 10 and contains art experiences which he has loved for many years – in a bid to get viewers thinking and arguing about what their own personal Top 10 might be.

By exploring what it is about each individual piece that makes it beautiful, and by making unexpected and revelatory comparisons between the art of different eras, Matt ultimately examines why art matters.

Matt's 10 principles of art and the objects he celebrates are:

  1. Nature – a motorway bridge in southern France.
  2. Simplicity – a Renaissance altarpiece by Piero della Francesca.
  3. Unity – a medieval cathedral in Monreale, Sicily.
  4. Transformation – the cave-art of the Dordogne, France.
  5. The Surroundings – a contemporary art gallery in Munich.
  6. Animation – Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling.
  7. Surprise – a painting by the Belgian surrealist, Rene Magritte.
  8. Pattern – the Roman mosaics in a museum in Tunisia.
  9. Selection – a canvas made of rubbish by the American artist Robert Rauschenberg.
  10. Spontaneity – a depiction of the South Sea islands by Paul Gauguin.

BBC PARLIAMENT Saturday 14 November 2009

The Supreme Court – Home To America's Highest Court

Saturday 14 November
9.30-11.00pm BBC PARLIAMENT

BBC Parliament broadcasts a special documentary produced by its US counterpart, C-SPAN, which looks into the history, architecture and workings of the United States Supreme Court building in Washington DC.

Through interviews, tours and unprecedented access to the building's public and private spaces, the programme presents a ground-breaking look inside the place that both houses and symbolises the US judicial system.

The US Supreme Court opens its doors to television to allow American citizens and now British ones to witness the work of the Court and the thinking behind its work. All the current Supreme Court Justices are interviewed in the programme, together with some who have retired. The Court is an integral part of the three pillars of the US Constitution: President, Congress and Court. It sits in one of the finest and grandest buildings in the United States capital, Washington DC.

Supreme Court Justices – or more correctly Associate Justices under the Chief Justice – are nominated by the President. There then follows a full open hearing by Congress. At these hearings the political, and often religious, leanings of the nominees are extensively picked over by the Committee. The make-up of the Supreme Committee is heavily dependent on the vacancies, which occur during a particular presidency.

On 5 October, the UK Supreme Court came into being, following radical reforms. The UK's highest Court, except for criminal cases in Scotland, had been a committee of the House of Lords – "The Law Lords". The Government felt that it was no longer appropriate for the highest court in the land to be part of the legislature.

Lady Sarah Hill (Lyndsey Marshal) confronts William Garrow (Andrew Buchan)

After more derision from Silvester, Garrow is spurred on to defend Edgar Cole, who is accused of raping a servant, as the legal drama co-created by Tony Marchant continues.

Garrow controversially wins and Cole is acquitted, much to the disappointment of Lady Sarah, who believes that Garrow only agreed to defend Cole to show off his legal skills. After the trial, Lady Sarah confronts Garrow but Silvester interrupts and senses the intimacy between them. His insinuation offends Garrow and he challenges Silvester to a duel to defend Lady Sarah's honour.

Southouse is furious with Garrow for challenging Silvester but agrees to be Garrow's second. They meet Silvester and his second, George Hervey, at dawn for the showdown. Garrow wins the right to shoot first but decides to shoot into the ground. Southouse is relieved but Silvester insists on taking his turn to teach Garrow a lesson, shooting him in the arm.

Sir Arthur is keen to learn the result of the duel and passes on the news that Garrow has been shot to Lady Sarah. Her reaction causes him to question her fidelity. Lady Sarah visits Garrow and admits her feelings. They kiss for the first time but, later, she tells him she must remain true to her husband.

Garrow's injury is not serious and he is soon back in court and up against his old nemesis, thief-taker Edward Forrester. Garrow is defending Tom and Phebe, who are accused of stealing from a shop owned by Katharine Stanton, on the orders of Forrester. Katherine's grandson, Dan, gave chase to the thieves but ran into Forrester, who beat Dan up. Dan dies and Tom and Phebe are accused of killing him.

Garrow is eager to cross-examine Forrester again but, as Southouse points out, recent distractions have left him ill-prepared. Forrester manages to humiliate him again. At dinner, Garrow subtly suggests to Judge Varley that some thief-takers like Forrester commit perjury in order to make more money for securing convictions.

Later, Forrester, is arrested for perjury. Tom and Phebe are sentenced to transportation and Forrester is sentenced to two hours in the stocks.

Meanwhile, Southouse guesses the reason for the duel and is angry and disappointed with Garrow. They argue and Southouse suggests they end their association. Stubbornly, Garrow agrees.

The cast includes Andrew Buchan as William Garrow, Lyndsey Marshal as Lady Sarah Hill, Aidan McArdle as Silvester, Alun Armstrong as Southouse, Rupert Graves as Sir Arthur Hill and Steven Waddington as Forrester.

Life – Insects Ep 6/10

Monday 16 November
9.00-10.00pm BBC ONE
The bombardier beetle expels a caustic mix of chemicals
The bombardier beetle expels a caustic mix of chemicals

Insects are in the spotlight as the series from the BBC's Natural History Unit, narrated by David Attenborough, continues. There are more types of insects than all the other animals on Earth combined – the ratio is thought to be 200 million individual insects for every human being. The success of insects is down to their flexibility, their ability to develop new ways of living and to change their body shapes.

Darwin's stag beetle of Chile is the insect world's perfect demonstration of a flexible body form. The massive jaws of the male have evolved to become serrated and curved – the ultimate fighting weapon.

Insects can also become walking chemical weapons. The bombardier beetle has two chambers within its body, each storing an inert chemical. When threatened, the beetle mixes the chemicals in a third chamber and then bursts them explosively from its rear in a boiling, caustic jet. The jet pulses at 500 times per second, allowing the beetle's rear end to cool just enough to prevent it from cooking itself.

The Japanese red bug displays amazing care for its young. The youngsters eat a rare fruit which their mother laboriously collects. It can take her hours and she may have to fight off another mother for it. But if she doesn't get the fruit back to her young quickly enough, they grow impatient and abandon their nest to search for a better mother.

Insects' greatest societies are the closest thing in the natural world to the complexity of a human city. Some grass-cutter ants are huge-jawed, perfect for cutting; others are smaller and do the carrying. They march in their thousands, carrying cut grass above their heads. And yet they can't digest it. Instead, they cultivate a fungus in their nest which grows on the grass and breaks it down. The ants then eat the fungus. They grow so much of it that a colony may contain five million ants.

Flying With Butterflies, this week's diary feature at the end of the programme, shows how climbers Tim Fogg and Jim Spickler took three days to rig a very complicated spider's web of cables among the trees enabling the crew to "fly" a camera through thousands of monarch butterflies during their mass hibernation in the Mexican forests.

MODERN BEAUTY SEASON
The Art On Your Wall With Sue Perkins

Monday 16 November
9.00-10.00pm BBC TWO (Schedule addition 2 November)

In recent years, Britain has seen a rise in affordable art, mass-market masterpieces. This trend has facilitated a change in taste of domestic art, but why is the art we hang in our homes so different from the kind of art we expect to see in a gallery?

In The Art On Your Wall, part of the Modern Beauty Season on BBC Two and BBC Four, comedienne Sue Perkins aims to discover just what the average British person displays above their mantelpiece. Some of these iconic images are reproductions of famous artists, while some are unknowns, but Sue tracks down the artists behind the most popular prints to find out what has influenced their work.

Sue discusses Tretchikoff – the seminal Sixties print artist – with Red Or Dead founder and print collector Wayne Hemingway. She meets Scottish miner-turned-millionaire painter Jack Vettriano and tracks down best-selling print photographer, and creator of Ullswater, Mel Allen.

Sue also chats to Spencer Rowell, the photographer behind Athena's Man And Baby print, before heading to Cornwall to get to the bottom of the two million-selling Tennis Girl print, by meeting its flamboyant creator, Martin Elliot. Finally, she meets Sam Toft, creator of Mr Mustard, the quirky figure featured in a series of best-selling prints.

This is the story of the images that changed these artists' lives as well as Britain's walls.

The Modern Beauty Season examines the perception of beauty both in modern and classical art forms through a collection of films on BBC Two and BBC Four.

Enid

New series
Monday 16 November

Helena Bonham Carter stars as Enid Blyton
Helena Bonham Carter stars as Enid Blyton

Enid is the first of three major one-off films to première on BBC Four as part of the Women We Loved season about the artistic careers of British female icons Margot Fonteyn, Gracie Fields and Enid Blyton.

Enid Blyton's charming characters and classic tales have enchanted generations of children for nearly 80 years. More than 500 million copies of her books have been sold in 40 countries.

This one-off drama reveals the woman behind such enduring stories as the beloved Famous Five, Secret Seven, Malory Towers and the Noddy series. The film will cast light on this ambitious and driven woman from the adversity of her imperfect childhood to her rise to become a renowned author and household name. Enid explores how the orderly, reassuringly clear worlds she created in her stories contrasted with the complexity of her personal life.

Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter, Sweeney Todd) plays Enid and Matthew Macfadyen (Frost/Nixon, Little Dorrit) plays Hugh Pollock, her publisher, first husband and father of her daughters Gillian and Imogen. Denis Lawson (Bleak House) plays Kenneth Darrell Waters, a London surgeon who becomes Enid's second husband following her divorce, and Claire Rushbrook (Mutual Friends) plays her friend, Dorothy.

The Women We Loved season continues next week with Jane Horrocks as Gracie Fields in the romantic drama Gracie! by Nick Vivian, charting the rise to fame in the Thirties of the singer and comedienne from Rochdale who became the nation's darling and the highest-paid film actress in the world.

In the third film, Anne-Marie Duff (Is Anybody There, Born Equal, The Virgin Queen) stars as the great dancer Margot Fonteyn in Amanda Coe's film, Margot.

For further insight into Enid Blyton's life, a new online BBC Archive collection will be available closer to transmission at bbc.co.uk/archive.

Josie Lawrence and Shane Richie begin their journey in Memphis, Tennessee
Josie Lawrence and Shane Richie begin their journey in Memphis, Tennessee

It's the final leg of the Around The World In 80 Days challenge and actors Shane Richie and Josie Lawrence must race against the clock to bring the dramatic relay to a close – raising money for this year's BBC Children In Need Appeal along the way. The duo have a thousand miles to cover to reach the port of Wilmington, North Carolina, but disaster is just around the corner with Hurricane Bill making its way across the Atlantic – and heading straight for them.

Arriving at Wilmington, Shane and Josie are aghast to discover that their ship will have to be anchored offshore to sit out the raging storm. After two anxious days of waiting, the pair find themselves severely behind schedule. If they continue their present course they will end up getting back on the 82nd day. As the ship follows in the storm's wake to Europe, Shane and Josie experience the extreme sea swell and are soon rushing for the toilet as seasickness takes hold.

With the risk of failure too close for comfort, Shane and Josie's only chance to get back on track is to somehow get off the ship early as it passes the south coast of the UK. The problem is, the cargo ship can't stop and the team is forced to take extreme measures to race on – clambering down a rope ladder from the ship and onto another boat.

Seven miles off the Cornish Coast, rescue arrives by way of a boat skippered by record-breaking yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur to sail them back to dry land. It's an amazing surprise for Shane and Josie, who are overcome with emotion.

The pressure is on to make the midnight deadline as all of the other celebrity globetrotters start gathering at the Reform Club to celebrate completion of the challenge and welcome the carpet bag's return to London, but will Shane and Josie, and the bag, make it?

Around The World In 80 Days is simulcast on the BBC HD channel – the BBC's High Definition channel, available through Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media.

Hundreds of 16 to 24-year-old butchers, mechanics, hairdressers and chefs from across the country took part in a rigorous audition process in an attempt to be crowned the best in their profession. They were whittled down to a final five in each of the four categories.

Each programme features a different profession, in which the finalists face a number of increasingly difficult challenges designed to test their skill, knowledge, ability and passion for the job they do. As they pit their skills against each other they are pushed to their limits to impress two judges who are experts in their field and industry.

Tonight's judges are Justin Preston, owner of Allens of Mayfair, the oldest British butcher to still operate on its original site, and master butcher David Lishman, from Lishmans in Yorkshire, one of the best-known names in the business and twice British sausage champion.

With three rigorous challenges, a grilling from the judges and elimination all to be overcome, the last person standing will truly be able to claim the title of BBC Young Butcher Of The Year.

The exclusive and powerful Bendorf group, made up of the eight richest men in the world, is meeting on British soil and Section D must find out what is being planned, as the spy drama continues.

Ros is sent undercover and attends the meeting, but what should be a routine operation becomes a life-or-death situation when a group of armed terrorists take everyone hostage.

The hostages, including Ros, are being held in an underground bunker – there's only one way out and it's rigged with explosives.

Harry sends in Lucas and Jo to assess the situation and, as they arrive at the scene, the situation worsens when leader of the terrorists, Finn Lambert, puts Thomas Mickelson from the Bendorf group on trial and broadcasts it live to the world, online.

Andrew Marr goes back to the Twenties as his investigation into the Making Of Modern Britain continues
Andrew Marr goes back to the Twenties as his investigation into the Making Of Modern Britain continues

Andrew Marr reaches the Twenties, in tonight's fourth film in his new history series.

Imperial Britannia is sliding from view and a more modern Britain is trying everything new and asking endless questions about how we should live our lives. A great new age of experiment has arrived in politics, writing, art, sex and drugs. After the trauma of the Great War, survivors throw themselves into the new urban scene of nightclubs, cocktails and jazz, where royalty, gangsters and Hollywood stars rub shoulders with new money.

With rare archive footage, Andrew tells the story of the post-war housing boom; the birth of radio broadcasting and the creation of the BBC; and revolutionary union activities on "Red" Clydeside.

Michael Collins risks his life by negotiating with Lloyd George over Ireland and his death kicks off a bloody civil war that is feared by some to be the beginning of the end of the British Empire. The modern scourge of political sleaze engulfs Lloyd George in a cash-for-honours scandal involving blackmail, spies and the strange disappearance of a radical MP.

The nine-day General Strike and the Wall Street Crash bring Britain's roaring Twenties to a dramatic close. As the cocktail party of the decade comes to an end, there are uncertain times ahead for Modern Britain.

MODERN BEAUTY SEASON
State Of The Arts

Wednesday 18 November
9.00-10.00pm BBC FOUR (Schedule addition 2 November)

Artists today live in a world where the contemporary art bubble has burst in recent years. Previous recessions have spawned new types of artists and art historian Dr Gus Casely-Hayford embarks on a journey to discover if the recent economic crash is having this same effect, in State Of The Arts, part of BBC Two and BBC Four's Beauty Season.

To know where art is, you have to look at its history, and it is a history of rebellions. Ever since Duchamp's Fountain, artists have been taking "shock" to a whole new level. The conceptual art from the Young British Artists (YBAs) came about with the help of people like Andy Warhol and the financial boom in the Eighties.

These artists were celebrities, preoccupied with the mass market. They were rebels and their influence and artwork prices skyrocketed. Times are changing and, for Gus, it is time to look beyond the YBAs for answers. There is a new generation of artists who are reacting to today's YBAs – a group of undergraduates, from Glasgow, who have put on a show of their work in Shoreditch. Gus explores this work and is struck by how aesthetically driven it seems.

On his journey, Gus spends time talking to a range of artists at different stages of their careers to find out what they are making, where they are making it and where they think art is going in the future. Among others he meets Sir Anthony Caro, one of the greatest living sculptors, Turner Prize-winner Grayson Perry and emerging artists – from a squatter who wants to set up a London art house to a collective who think they've created a new movement. There is so much going on, almost too much for Gus to take in.

Gus concludes that artists are going through a more reflective period. The market has been in control for too long and it is time for art to take over again. Artists are thinking about technique and skill and their relationship to history and, as a consequence, the art scene is thriving. It is fertile ground from which he concedes great new artists will emerge.

The Modern Beauty Season examines the perception of beauty both in modern and classical art forms through a collection of films on BBC Two and BBC Four.

Raymond Blanc challenges the couple to make dishes to sell at a local farmers market

The five remaining couples get a lesson in seasonality as The Restaurant continues.

Before their restaurants open for evening service, Raymond Blanc sets them a challenge. They must use only fresh, local and seasonal produce to make dishes to sell at a farmers' market. As well as showcasing the best produce, their dishes must promote their restaurant concepts.

It's a chance to find new customers and show Raymond's partners, Sarah Willingham and David Moore, what they can do but, as the pressure mounts, one pair goes absent without leave.

Back at the restaurants, a surprise delivery from Raymond puts seasonal meat on all the couples' menus. For some chefs it's a welcome chance to move beyond their comfort zone, but others find it barbaric.

It's clear that while some of the couples are beginning to shine, the bravado of others is wearing thin. Whatever Raymond, Sarah and David see will decide which of the couples' restaurants will close.

A History Of Christianity –
Orthodoxy: From Empire To Empire Ep 3/6

Thursday 19 November
9.00-10.00pm BBC FOUR

Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch tells an epic story of endurance and survival, as A History Of Christianity continues with an exploration into the troubled history of the Orthodox Church.

Beginning at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in London, where he is a guest at a congregation rich in ancient symbolism, Professor MacCulloch considers the story this passionate drama is trying to tell.

Tracing the origins of the Orthodox Church back to Constantinople, an unlikely husband and wife established an empire that widened the divide between East and West. Professor MacCulloch travels to Egypt to understand why ancient icons are so important to Orthodoxy, and how they survived the iconoclastic crisis.

In the early Middle Ages, Orthodoxy was under siege, first by Catholic Crusaders in a shameful act of Christian betrayal, and later by Islam. Professor MacCulloch visits the Czech Republic to show how two ingenious saints ensured the survival of Orthodoxy in Eastern Europe.

In the harsh environs of Russia, Orthodoxy found surprisingly fertile ground as a "people's religion", surviving repeated attempts to subdue it by tyrants like Ivan The Terrible and Peter The Great.

When the Bolsheviks tried to purge Christianity from Russia and replace it with atheism, the Orthodox Church faced extinction, but Professor MacCulloch reveals how Orthodoxy survived and why Stalin was forced to bring the Church back into the fold.

A History Of Christianity is a co-production with The Open University. Further information on the OU can be found at open2.net.
