It's Chrissie's birthday and, despite Oliver wanting to put some distance between them, he invites her out for a drink to celebrate, as the medical drama continues.

After feeling ill all morning, however, Chrissie disappears to the toilet and takes a pregnancy test – which turns out to be positive. She rejects Oliver's offer of a drink and instead has dinner with her father.

Ric, meanwhile, discovers a fracture in Maria's spine and asks Penny to watch over her and keep her parents and Donna informed of her progress.

Maria later awakes, although spirits are dampened when Penny discovers she has no feeling in the lower part of her body – which Penny believes to be spinal shock, from which Maria will definitely recover.

Donna struggles to comfort Maria and her parents and an angry Ric accuses Penny of being irresponsible in giving a patient false hope.

Chrissie is played by Tina Hobley, Oliver by James Anderson, Ric by Hugh Quarshie, Maria by Phoebe Thomas, Donna by Jaye Jacobs and Penny by Emma Catherwood.

Later Live ... With Jools Holland Ep 1/10

New series Live event/outside broadcast
Tuesday 15 September
10.00-10.30pm BBC TWO

Later Live ... With Jools Holland returns for a new, 10-week series tonight.

Once again, the show will be live at 10pm each Tuesday evening on BBC Two along with the now-traditional hour each Friday at 11.35pm. The live show is an opportunity to see the majority of the artists perform one or two numbers live to air and the Friday show sees further numbers from Tuesday's acts, plus the added extra of at least one artist not featured in the live show.

The first show in this run features Devon's stadium rock lords Muse, who perform tracks from their new, fifth album, The Resistance; Mercury-nominated pop powerhouse Florence & The Machine; Gossip, fronted by the formidable Beth Ditto, whose recent album, Music For Men, was produced by Rick Rubin; Texan legend and Grammy-winning Lyle Lovett, who performs a number or two from his upcoming album, Natural Forces, the follow-up to 2007's It's Not Big It's Large; Jimmy Cobb's A Kind Of Blue @ 50, featuring the only surviving musician from the original line-up on Miles Davis's landmark album, A Kind Of Blue (Jimmy was the drummer); and Nevada singer-songwriter Alela Diane, who has toured with The Decemberists, Vashti Bunyan and Iron & Wine, and who makes her Later debut with tracks from her To Be Still album.

More artists for this first episode will be announced closer to transmission.

As a taster of some of the 60-plus artists appearing on this upcoming series, Later Live ... with Jools Holland features the likes of fast-rising king of pop, East London's own Dizzee Rascal; inspiration to Bob Dylan, Brooklyn's Ramblin' Jack Elliott; Mika, who returns to consolidate his 2007 success with a second album; Alabama's "Empress of Soul" Gladys Knight; arguably the most important man in hip hop, Jay-Z; the mighty Foo Fighters, who pay a return visit to the show; US neo-soul pioneer Maxwell; Latin pop queen Shakira, who makes her Later debut; and one of the kings of easy listening, Andy Williams.

Since 1992, Later has featured performances from some of the biggest and hottest names in music, with 2009's spring series welcoming The Specials, Carole King, Depeche Mode, Sonic Youth, Guurumul, Grizzly Bear, Booker T, Lisa Hannigan, New York Dolls, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Kasabian and Paolo Nutini.

(L-R) Laura Haddock, Dan Clark, Leila Hoffman and David Armand star in How Not To Life Your Life

Written by and starring Dan Clark, BBC Three's comedy, How Not To Live Your Life, returns for a new series and sees twentysomething Don, a singleton who has a habit of stumbling his way through life, being put into some extreme situations.

Every tricky situation is given a unique twist in which viewers get to see a list of choices Don is considering – such as what not to wear to a gym, how you shouldn't react as you're being fired, excuses for being late for work and things you wished you could say to a man talking loudly on the phone on a bus.

Having become close to winning the heart of his ideal woman, Abby, in the last series, Don suddenly finds himself bereft. Oblivious and newly single, Abby has opted for six months travelling to get over her ex-boyfriend – leaving Don with both a void in his life and a spare room to fill.

Luckily, Don has Eddie to cater to his every need, which includes helping in his search for a new lodger. Eddie used to be Don's nan's carer but happily transferred his duties to taking care of Don, who inherited his nan's house.

From cooking and cleaning to cutting up his food, scrubbing his back and wiping his nose, among other things, no task is too great or small for Eddie and he's the closest thing Don has to a friend.

To make matters worse, Eddie has taken on Mrs Treacher, Don's elderly neighbour, who has become more eccentric than ever since her husband passed away. Eddie brings her everywhere with him – much to Don's dismay.

Don, however, soon realises that Abby might return from her travels still single and ready for him to waltz back into her affections. So this could be his last chance to play the field, plus it will earn him some extra cash. It's just up to Don and Eddie to decide who gets the spare room.

Dan Clark stars as Don, David Armand as Eddie, Leila Hoffman as Mrs Treacher and Laura Haddock as Samantha.
