Horrible Histories Ep 13/13

Thursday 9 July
4.35-5.05pm BBC ONE

The critically acclaimed historical comedy series concludes this week in true Horrible Histories style, with a selection of sketches packed with gore and toilet humour.

Roman Kitchen Nightmares examines the culinary tastes of the Romans, including tantalising dishes such as sheep's lungs mixed with rotten fish, and the programme also explores the communal delights of Roman lavatoriums.

Meanwhile, guts and gore from Victorian times are detailed in a sketch about life in Crimean hospitals before the arrival of Florence Nightingale, and the macabre carryings on of body snatchers Burke and Hare – who murdered people to sell their bodies to the Edinburgh physician Knox for dissection – are regaled in song.

Rounding off the programme, the last Pharaoh of Egypt is revealed in This is Your Reign; and the ghost of Richard III returns to question Shakespeare's artistic license and lack of historical accuracy.

Horrible Histories boasts some of Britain's finest comedy talent, including writers Steve Punt, Jon Holmes, Ben Ward and Giles Pilbrow. The series stars Sarah Hadland, Jim Howick, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe Douglas, Matthew Baynton and Ben Willbond. Meera Syal guest stars as the fairy-tale narrator and John Eccleston is the puppeteer for the Horrible Histories rat.

Finally, De Li tells Yojojo everyone needs to wait for the mango to become ripe. So they all wait until, eventually, the mango is ready to eat. Everyone eats a piece and it's "Waybuloo".

Deadly 60 Ep 7/13

Thursday 9 July
5.15-5.45pm CBBC

Steve Backshall embarks on some nocturnal adventures in the northern territories of Australia to seek out things that go bump in the night, and also to capture a TV first, in this week's episode of Deadly 60.

Steve begins his night-time encounters on a riverside excursion with a group of rangers to trap a large salt-water crocodile, which is the largest of all the crocodilian species. Nicknamed Mr Stinky, this crocodile's injuries have prevented him from hunting properly – leading him to seek scraps from the river-bank and get rather too close to the local fishermen. The team catch their culprit, but it is only when they get him back to shore that Steve is able to see the full magnitude of this huge prehistoric predator and the risk this mighty animal posed to the public.

Next up is a spine-chilling ghost hunt down an abandoned gold mine. In what is thought to be a television first, Steve and his team head deep into the bowels of the mine to capture the elusive ghost bat on film in the wild. Filming in the dark, surrounded by cockroaches and other creepy crawlies, the crew catch sight of the pale, spectre-like creatures. These incredible, white bats have translucent wings and huge fangs and are capable of causing harm to a wide range of prey, making them a prime candidate for Steve's Deadly 60 list.
