Esther (Sarah Lancashire) steps in to save the day
Esther (Sarah Lancashire) steps in to save the day

Well-meaning meddling from fellow choir members results in a spontaneous engagement for the choir's newest additions, Sofija and Nemanja, as Debbie Horsfield's uplifting musical drama series continues. Overjoyed bride-to-be Sofija begins to prepare her dream church wedding and pins her hopes on a special performance from Michael's choir during the ceremony.

Events turn sour, however, when Nemanja steps on Gilbert's toes both in the choir and at work. Gilbert is outraged when Nemanja is offered his coveted soloist position in the choir and a lucrative decorating contract at the church.

But Nemanja holds firm and refuses to be bullied by the "old guard". The extent of Gilbert and wife Ethel's intimidation campaign forces Sofija to question whether she and Nemanja will ever be accepted into the community. With their wedding plans in tatters, it's down to Esther's choir to step in – but will it be too late to save the day?

New friends Esther and Jake, meanwhile, find themselves thrown together by their work on the new church community space. The project helps take Esther's mind off of her failed marriage, albeit temporarily, as Layla, who's keen to impress Michael, focuses on forming a bond with his and Esther's teenage daughter, Georgia.

With more intrigue about the true nature and history of their relationship, Jake is desperate to shut Layla out of his life for good. Happier times are ahead for Kyle, though, as a tentative friendship with Grace begins to blossom.

Sofija is played by Brana Bajic, Nemanja by Kristian Kiehling, Gilbert by David Fleeshman, Esther by Sarah Lancashire, Jake by Bryan Dick, Layla by Sarah Alexander, Michael by Neil Pearson, Georgia by Jo Woodcock, Kyle by Richard Fleeshman and Grace by Ayesha Gwilt.

Speaking at this daunting venue is no walk in the park for the young speakers and only 10 will make it through to the next challenge – where the dragon awaits.

Mentor Deborah is on hand to teach the 10 surviving contestants about the art of conviction. After a series of sessions, the teenage hopefuls are sent into busy Covent Garden market with empty jars to see if they can convince the public that they are the most important jars in the world. Under Deborah's watchful eye, they are then set the task of speaking at London's world-famous Speakers' Corner in front of a very expectant audience.

The two weakest contestants will be eliminated from the contest and only eight will go through to tomorrow's round of challenges – but only one will be eventually crowned The Speaker...

Mad Men – The Inheritance Ep 10/13

Tuesday 14 April
10.00-10.50pm BBC FOUR

In the year that America talked about putting a man on the moon, Sterling Cooper plans to promote the company's ability to help congressmen land aerospace contacts for their districts, as the award-winning drama continues.

In preparation for the upcoming convention, the account team attendees, Pete and Paul, discuss their strategy. Don reminds them that every engineer, scientist and general will be there "trying to figure out how to put a man on the moon, or blow up Moscow – whichever one costs more." However, it is events outside the office that are the focus this week.

Pete's family world is in turmoil – his wife, Trudy, keeps asking him to consider adoption and his brother, Bud, reveals how thoroughly their father squandered their inheritance. But it is while he is with his mother that Pete finally snaps. She threatens to disinherit him if he adopts a child – repeating his father's description of adoption as "pulling from the discards". His response leaves his mother in shock and forces Bud to come clean about her financial state.

Across town, Betty also has family problems as she learns her father, Gene, has had a stroke. She calls Don for support, and when they both arrive at his house the next morning Gene is confused – and, at one point, he mistakes Betty for her dead mother. Later that day, when she is chatting to her brother, William, Betty complains about Gloria, their stepmother. He says that he appreciates Gloria for taking on their father's care. The following morning, as Betty clears her dad's breakfast plate, Gene again mistakes Betty for his late wife.

When Don and Betty arrive back home, Don goes upstairs to take a shower but Betty tells him he should leave.

Later, in the office, Don informs Joan that he will be accompanying Pete to California instead of Paul, and instructs her to send Paul a memo about the change of plans. However, she heads back to where everyone is gathered and publicly tells him, instead – taking great pleasure in upsetting him.

Pete is played by Vincent Kartheiser; Paul Kinsey by Michael Gladis, Don by Jon Hamm; Trudy Campbell by Alison Brie; Bud Campbell by Rich Hutchman; Betty Draper by January Jones; Gene Hofstadt by Ryan Cutrona; William Hofstadt by Eric Ladin; Gloria Massey Hofstadt by Darcy Shean and Joan by Christina Hendricks.
